Lacrosse player forced to sit out because his head is too big to fit a helmet
SB Nation ^ | 18 Feb 2018 | James Dator

“Lacrosse is kind of my whole life,” Chu, 19, of Mendon, said when we met on campus. “I can’t remember ever going this long without playing.”

“It’s extremely frustrating,” he said. “But we don’t have leverage over the manufacturers. We can’t compel them to make a special helmet. We can encourage them, cajole them, work with them, but not command them.”

So for now, a promising player is stuck on the bench — until a helmet is made that can fit his noggin.

He has trouble finding a motorcycle helmet to fit him, too...

‘Tis a liability problem. NCAA and its schools have big pockets which can’t risk the potential liability from him using his ersatz, non-standard, helmet getting knocked in the head playing a dangerous position in a dangerous sport and then suing because they let him play that way. Making a fits one helmet to same standards as the others and doing enough testing to certify it as equal probably costs a small fortune. Given a profitable payment I’m confident the manufacturers would make one, but the Lacrosse market is probably too small for them to eat the price and write it off to goodwill. So he either needs to find a rich Lacrosse sugar daddy who’ll pay whatever the manufacturers need, run a go fund me site to raise the same or accept this as a good lesson in basic economics and tort law.

At 19 all he can think of is playing Lacrosse? Pro Lacrosse in the US pays $10-25k/year without health insurance. Not a promising life business model. Maybe he could recruit enough fools to play ‘natural’ lacrosse without the protective gear and with a strong enough liability waiver signed by all. It’s at least a possible as a non-Mugglized Quidditch league. Or he could switch to something saner, like Ultimate Frisbee.

An 8 also. One size fits all doesn’t fit.

As someone with a 7 7/8 Stetson that is a little too tight, and a XXXL HJC motorcycle helmet in the garage I can relate. The world just isn’t comfortable out here towards the edge of the bell curve. Baseball caps? Forget about it. Even with the adjustment bands let all the way out they perch ridiculously on top of my head.

Hanke: "All right, George, all right. I'm sorry. I'm very, very sorry. I'm so sorry that I didn't want your rather bulbous head struggling to find its way through the normal-size neck hole of my finely knit sweater."

A gentleman that I worked for, for many years was huge.
No fat, more like a 6-5 tree trunk.
I never noticed much until a coworker ask if I ever noticed that Big Pete could easily fit a stack of business envelopes in his shirt pocket?
He then explained that Pete’s shirts are custom tailored, a standard pocket would look like a postage stamp.

Kids were drawn to him like a magnet, not just mine but most if not all at company events???

I have a narrow foot and have a hard time finding shoes that fit. Seems like 80% of the shoes are like a D width.
Sort of think this oddball (no offense intended) is really a wasted story.

Yep, some 8s fit me, some don’t. I hate not being able to find hats. The next worse thing on my list is T-shirts that are long enough. After that, gloves that will fit my hands are really hard to find. Sometimes, you just want to buy stuff..and not special order every thing.

I also have a big head....can barely fit through doors...lol

Seriously though, perhaps a helmet could be fabricated for him with a high-end 3-D printer?

click to the Boston Globe site. He doesn’t look freakish, but he’s a full-faced 6’ 2” and 265 pounds. BIG KID.

I’d be willing to bet that, on average, lacrosse players tend to be smaller than say, NCAAF players. So there’s no market for larger hemets.

Why not just let the kid use an NCAA approved football helmet.

Larry, is that about George Costanza’s bulbous head stretching out the sweater?
