Sad that they have to bring protection just to exercise their 1st Amendment rights. They just weren't ready for the right kind of thugs.

It’s possible that the men were posting the fliers in unauthorized places, such as telephone poles, but if the left were doing it, some judge would rule that people have a Constitutional right to post flyers on telephone poles.

One more easily infers they were exercising their “first amendment rights” with spray cans, not “hanging posters”.
