MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) The Rhode Island man who claimed to be the sailor kissing a nurse in an iconic image at the end of World War II has died.
The Providence Journal reports George Mendonsa, 95, died at an assisted living facility in Middletown Sunday.
Mendonsa was never able to convince LIFE magazine he was the sailor in the famous photo. However, recent facial recognition technology verified his lifelong claim.

RIP
It is a shame that the left took this iconic photo and used it as a hindsight #MeTo moment.
Thanks for doing your part when it counted.
The godless left are jealous of the married Christian women getting more than the left claims to. :)
What a time, what an era, what a struggle to prevail in, what a generation, what a sense of heroic accomplishment they must have felt, what a sense of relief to finally see it through to total victory on both fronts, what immense sadness they must have felt for all who gave their lives to bring those two massive victories about.
Edith Shain was the nurse; Glenn McDuffie, whom Shain ID'd as the sailor, died in 1986; George Mendonsa's claim has persisted longer because he lived longer. Same kind of "no, it was me" kind of thing happened with Billy the Kid and Alfalfa. Thanks Morgana.
I don't care either way -- bon voyage, sailor!
RIP.
