"Bizarre World of Frank Zappa” Hologram Tour Sets North American Dates

The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa tour, which will pair a hologram of the late iconic musician with a band featuring some of his former collaborators, has announced the initial North American dates of the outing, which will kick off on April 19 at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.

The tour, whose East Coast stint will also feature stops in Boston, Albany, Baltimore and more, will offer a performance based on the audio from a batch of performances Zappa played at a Los Angeles rehearsal space in 1974. Included in the touring band will be guitarists Ray White and Mike Keneally, bassist Scott Thunes, multi-instrumentalist Robert Martin, percussionist Ed Mann and drummer Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers, the Zappa vault archivist.

Tickets went on sale today. I'm taking the entire DoodleBob family; I saw Frank when he was alive and Dweezil several times. I suspect Frank's hologram will blow several bands playing nowadays off the stage.

I hope the show is successful, but the organizers may have waited too long. Jazz and long form progressive rock are not heard as much today as they were some 30 years ago. We will see if people from our generation will come out and enjoy the show, or just wait until it’s available on DVD. Perhaps those in charge of his Estate could not agree on what to do with left over material from his performances.

Frank died in 1993. He was a very bright and inquisitive man. He would have loved the internet and the ever-expanding world of Apps. He would have a lot to say about Facebook poking it’s corporate nose under every private tent whenever possible. People casually throwing their privacy data out the window like
old useless crumbs of bread.

Saw Frank during the Joe’s Garage tour, and Dweezil played here 3 or 4 years ago.

Hopefully it makes it to the West Coast somewhere I can get to see it.

I use to be good friends with his mega fan Greg Bolognese out of Hicksville (yes that was the name of the town) Long Island. Never got into Zappa that much but Greg was a whole other story. Bolognese back then had this rep of being this music connoisseur, he use to walk around wearing a demin jacket with countless autographs by Frank Zappa on it, and I’ll never forget one day me and my friends started this band and had a gig in the local bar and he came to see us and walked out after one song and that was like WOOOOOO! The biggest insult you could imagine for a band back then in my neighborhood! LOL! That must have been around 1984 when I was about 15 or 16. What’s funny is when I put his name up with Zappas on Google it shows up...

Zappa was interesting if listened to while straight.
If you were properly prepared, it was like receiving
instructions over the radio.

An ex-girl friend’s older sister banged Frank after a concert back in the day. She went for a second helping in Boston & the GF & I took her over to that show.

I should look her up & tell her Frank is sort of around, again. Third time is the charm:)

I give him his due but was never a fan. Plus I was very ticked off that Zappa hid “An Evening With Wild Man Fischer” under a bushel for the sole purpose of screwing Larry Fischer.

I know why but FZ and frau knew who they were exploiting.

I saw Zappa during the 70’s in Pittsburgh. Hardest working band I ever saw. Love his solos - some of the best ever. I remember playing some of Frank’s solos for a friend that was into Van Halen - He was in awe. I used to play “The Muffin Man” from the Bongo Fury album over and over - my favorite guitar solo ever.

Don’t know if I’d pay to see the holographic show though - there’s so much out there on Youtube for free.

I saw Zappa twice in 1974 and 1983. Extremely tight bands. Did not enjoy Frank when he got into his extended sermons to the audience in 1983. But his music was stellar. Just shut up and play yer guitar.

I last saw Frank on his ill-fated 1988 tour...he did less preaching and more playing, and was killer. Chad Wackerman (his drummer) literally DID NOT STOP during the show, until the fake ending before the encore. Frank's bands were always top-notch.

Dweezil has done an outstanding job of keeping his Dad's music alive and relevant. Dweezil is an awes e musicna and guitarist to boot. I wish he AND Ahmet hadn't fought but family and business, man...it's a drag. I read they finally agreed to disagree so the lawsuits have ended and that is a good thing.
