Authorities in Escondido, northeast of San Diego, recovered the body Thursday of a man who witnesses say had been paddle-boarding down the surging current in a concrete-lined waterway.
A 911 caller reported that the man had been swept away by rushing water in the Escondido Creek near Rose Street shortly before 4 p.m., KTLA sister station KSWB in San Diego reported.
Responding crews positioned themselves to try and rescue him, according to the station. However, it soon became a recovery effort when they discovered the body near the Tulip Street overpass

As a teen, a few friends and I discussed the idea of tying a rope to a bridge over one of these rain-swollen storm canals and using it to surf the surging river. A quick glance at all the filth and debris quickly made us change our minds.
It ain’t just water coming downstream.

The usual mild nature of SoCal “weather” lulls some fools into mis-judgments.
I’ve seem twisters that ripped roofs off homes, mobile homes blown off their foundations, floods, very high winds, snow, hail etc.
Those flood channels and rivers, are rarely dangerous. This guy guessed wrong.

Well
I remember a tackle football game played in waist deep floodwater in a creek on campus. Lots of fun. Of course, there were no obstructions against which one could be pinned, as long as we stayed well away from the culverts. Ah, college.
Yes, we were sober. The picture made the school newspaper too.

There used to be a bus running out to the Escondido mall when I was stationed in Camp Pendleton during the 1980s. That was a huge mall. One Saturday, I remember going to the McDonalds and eating 6 Egg McMuffins. Yes, I had a half dozen Egg McMuffins. Then I went to the cinema and saw “The Right Stuff” four times in one day. That would have been around 1984. That was a pretty awesome move, well worth seeing four times in one day.

now, light rail from P-side to Escondido.

DARWIN AWARD winner!
Only a true dumbass goes into a drywash or storm control channel during or after it rains.
I don’t care if the heavy rain is 40 miles away, it can still get you.

And you can tell by the depth of the water in the channel, that was a just light to moderate rain storm.
Not even to much debris.
