For the anniversary of the destruction of the USS Maine on this date, 121 years ago. May the 266 sailors and marines who perished rest in peace. They are remembered.

My great uncle had a steroscope picture of that ship burning. It was in pristine condition.

I don’t know what happened to it.

The Spanish-American War resulted in the United States becoming an overt imperialist country, conquering and taking possession of culturally alien lands. The result was that America itself was forever transformed. It will never again be the nation it was and it is not clear that, despite the homage paid to its founding, it will survive as a republic with a common consensus of values. Diversity is not consistent with unity.

It’s more likely that the explosion was from poor handling of the black powder that the guns used or by a fire caused by the type of coal used in the boilers. The Maine wasn’t the only ship the unaccountably blew up.

iirc admiral rickover showed that the ship suffered an internal explosion.
