Have you seen videos of people throwing boiling water into the air to watch it freeze instantly? Its the latest viral challenge, and its sending people to the hospital.
Within the last view weeks, parts of the United States have been affected by the polar vortex, which occurs when circulating winds from the northern pole travel southward and cause below freezing temperatures.
To test just how cold the weather has been, folks have been tossing boiling water into the sky to turn it into tiny ice crystals.
Eight people who took part in the challenge have been treated at the burn center of Chicago's Loyola University Medical Center, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The patients treated range in age from three to 53, and theyve had injuries to their feet, arms, hands and face with varying degrees of burns.

The new term for cold weather. Polar Vortex
No wonder kids today have no clue and we old people have no idea what the hell they are talking about.

Yeah, that is some crazy stuff. We just had Polar Vortex Jayden in Minnesota.
For the last 60 years whenever it got really cold I just called it......winter.
Darwin Awards? Buehhler....? Anyone..?
If you have an equal volume of hot water and cold water, the hot water takes longer to freeze. That is because the hot water has more heat to dissipate than the cold water. BUT--if you allow the hot water to steam liberally, it evaporates, which is a cooling process. Steaming also causes the volume of the hot water to decrease, so there is less heat to dissipate. So, in some circumstances, you can make it appear that hot water freezes faster.
I tried it in Texas a couple years ago when it got down to 10. It didnt work. I guess it has to be much colder.
Wait, boiling water can burn you? Who knew?
Busted Windshield, Ouch!
What did That cost You?
Everything You Never Wanted to Know about Freezing Pee
Newtons Law of cooling tells us that:
T(t) = Ts + (To Ts)e(-kt)
With an assumed k = 0.3, we can solve Newtons law of cooling equation for Ts, and we get -112ºF (-80ºC).
...Still, -112°F is colder weather than I care to go out and pee in. And its colder than most Boy Scouts go winter camping in. Im not saying its never happened. The other day it was -110 (counting wind chill) on the top of Whiteface Mountain, 7 miles from here. But thats counting wind chill. Maybe it happened to Ernest Shackleton when he went to the South Pole. The record low temperature there is -116.

It is the same principle of 'piss'n in the wind'...not smart.
It’s a shame Bill Engvall wasn’t around to hand out “signs”!
That sounds like a sublimeing answer.
Well it freezes so fast it is still hot!
So it can cause 3rd degree burns.
;)
I’m waiting for the inevitable, “Sulfuric Acid Challenge”.
Darwin lives...
They should have stuck to tide pods. At least theyd be warm.
Hopefully nobody will do the “Bird Box” version.

I’m guessing college students that survived the Tide Pod eating challenge!!!!!
