Have you seen videos of people throwing boiling water into the air to watch it freeze instantly? It’s the latest viral challenge, and it’s sending people to the hospital.
Within the last view weeks, parts of the United States have been affected by the polar vortex, which occurs when circulating winds from the northern pole travel southward and cause below freezing temperatures.
To test just how cold the weather has been, folks have been tossing boiling water into the sky to turn it into tiny ice crystals.
Eight people who took part in the challenge have been treated at the burn center of Chicago's Loyola University Medical Center, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The patients treated range in age from three to 53, and they’ve had injuries to their feet, arms, hands and face with varying degrees of burns.

For the last 60 years whenever it got really cold I just called it......winter.

If you have an equal volume of hot water and cold water, the hot water takes longer to freeze. That is because the hot water has more heat to dissipate than the cold water. BUT--if you allow the hot water to steam liberally, it evaporates, which is a cooling process. Steaming also causes the volume of the hot water to decrease, so there is less heat to dissipate. So, in some circumstances, you can make it appear that hot water freezes faster.
I tried it in Texas a couple years ago when it got down to 10. It didn’t work. I guess it has to be much colder.

Newton’s Law of cooling tells us that:
T(t) = Ts + (To – Ts)e(-kt)
With an assumed k = 0.3, we can solve Newton’s law of cooling equation for Ts, and we get -112ºF (-80ºC).
...Still, -112°F is colder weather than I care to go out and pee in. And it’s colder than most Boy Scouts go winter camping in. I’m not saying it’s never happened. The other day it was -110 (counting wind chill) on the top of Whiteface Mountain, 7 miles from here. But that’s counting wind chill. Maybe it happened to Ernest Shackleton when he went to the South Pole. The record low temperature there is -116.

Well it freezes so fast it is still hot!
So it can cause 3rd degree burns.
