In the US, the average American teacher makes a starting salary of $44,000 a year, and about $68,000 for a veteran teacher.
Meanwhile, according to data released by the OECD, the starting salary for a high school teacher with no experience in Luxembourg is about $79,000. The peak salary for a veteran teacher is $137,000.
The OECD's full data set reveals a yawning gap between the highest and lowest paid teachers around the world. When converted to US dollars, many of the salaries fall well short of the average American teacher, who makes $44,000 starting out and approximately $68,000 at the upper end.
Here is the full breakdown of how teacher salaries stack up across the world, sorted by school level and gender.

Probably the Luxembourg teachers get paid so much because they have to play on the national soccer team, and well Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Spain right around the corner. It ain’t easy.
I was kidding, the real reason, Luxembourg is a corporate tax haven, they are up to the eyeballs in money there.
Many, many teachers on Long Island make well over $100,000 for a part time job. My friends sister makes $145k for indoctrinating 4th graders
I notice this says “up to.” What does it take to get to 137K/year?
Can we have that in after-tax take-home dollars?
The cost of living also has a lot to do with it.
Our son taught at Hinsdale High School District 86 and their pay scale probably exceeds Luxemburg.
Luxemburg pop 500k, District 86 pop 100k.
Maine Township High School District 207 average teacher salary of $110,929
The top five districts would exceed the total pop of Luxembourg.
The Top 5 school districts conferring six-figure pensions are Palatine TWP HSD 211, Palatine (449); Township HSD 214, Arlington Heights (419); Consolidated HSD 230, Orland Park (196); Northfield TWP HSD 225, Glenview (188); Maine TWP HSD 207, Park Ridge (180).
Yes, teaching in many if not most big cities ought to include some sort of danger pay.
Very interesting that men and women are paid virtually the same salaries.
Well, that explains why my property tax is $14,000 a year. 70% of our Nassau County property taxes go to the schools.
I’ll have to concede though, Long Island has recnnsome of the best public schools in the State.
what is the average price level in each of those countries?
US consistently in the top of those charts. Don’t give them a dime more.
Having not read the article, how are they comparing salaries? And do they take into account cost of living differences?
Like I said, haven’t read the article. . .just adhering to a long-standing FR tradition. . .
Teachers have about 0.000000025% influence on student competence. Teachers have to work with the (lack of) material that walks in the door, and much of the material that walks in the door is pathetic.
It's the parents. It's the home.
We are in the top 10 - WHAT is the problem?
Perfection is the enemy of the GOOD.
Prezactly!
This means nothing unless you position the pay rates and the competency not just so called “graduation” rates of all the students
This means nothing without it, and as far as I am concerned looking at the info which I monitor closely they are not worth more.
Waiting for some meaningful analysis
I managed to attain top salary of $98986.00 teaching middle school science for 35 years .Got out with great pension and sick day reembursement of $35,000 and free healthcare for life.(USA)
I see your point. But I’d still like to see the study. American students are way behind students in other countries and money spent per student here is higher than in those countries.
Per capita GDP US $59K
Per capita GDP Luxembourg $108K.
The srarting and max salaries follow per capita GDP very closely. As it always does.
Id like to see a comparative study on student competence vs teacher salaries.
Teachers have nothing to do with scores. Most of us are very good at our jobs, we are just hamstrung with the process; No discipline, imbeciles for administration who will do and say whatever to never go into the classroom again, a government that protects “certain” peoples, on and on.
Yes, I work only 190 days a year. I’d love to work more...PAY ME. Those that bitch about our easy schedule, we are paid for 190 days, think of the bitchin taxpayers if they had to actually pay us a salary. I pay 10% into retirement, will only collect after 30 years, and that is only 55% of my highest 5 years. I pay $600 a month for health care, it is not “free”. I’d say, after it’s all said and done, it’s not the glamorous free and easy money some of you believe. As an urban teacher I can tell you...the America you know and love...it’s over. I wish I could do something, anything, but...in 2-5 years...it’s over.
Teachers work their butts off.
They have huge responsibilities.
They are paid adequately.
Don’t confuse individual teachers with the public school system.
I have a retired brother who taught for 30 years in the Denver area and you echo what he says. I understand and support you.
He moved to a very rural area of western Colorado when he retired. He’s also a smart prepper because, like you, he sees it coming.
