The quick and easy noshes you love are chipping away at your mortality one nibble at a time, according to new research from France: We face a 14% higher risk of early death with each 10% increase in the amount of ultraprocessed foods we eat.

"Ultraprocessed foods are manufactured industrially from multiple ingredients that usually include additives used for technological and/or cosmetic purposes," wrote the authors of the study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. "Ultraprocessed foods are mostly consumed in the form of snacks, desserts, or ready-to-eat or -heat meals," and their consumption "has largely increased during the past several decades."

This trend may drive an increase of early deaths due to chronic illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, they say.

I like to fry corn tortillas in lard. Makes much better tacos.

We aren’t a homogeneous population. Some subsets of our population are really pulling the average down.

So our pharmaceuticals don’t work on those subset races?

The US has a large invader community with poor health and poorer life habits.

The lifespan in the USA has been way down the list long before the invader community became a reality.

I won't click the link because it's CNN but this is hardly breaking news. The more processed the foods, the unhealthier it typically is. When I go grocery shopping, I try to stay on the perimeter and grab produce, eggs, meat, fish, cheese, nuts and other whole foods. Almost everything in the aisles is crap but I do burrow in there to get my olive oil, sardines, seasonings and a few other healthy things.

Yes, people are living longer regardless of what they eat but many of them are very unhealthy, they are overweight, bloated, have no energy and eventually come down with the "western" diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, tooth decay, etc.

To each their own but I feel so healthy and energetic when I am staying away from added sugar and eating mostly whole, unprocessed foods. I do miss the pizza but I don't miss most of the other stuff I gave up.

Sounds about right. Some things, usually liberals, actually get things right, However, the ....socialist thing is quite wrong.

Do countries like Greece, Ireland, Austria, Spain, France, Norway, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Bermuda, and the Netherlands have Doctors and Pharmaceuticals as good as ours and the people of those countries have the ability to pay for them?

All those countries listed above, on average, have a longer lifespan than we do.
