'Combat shopping': Mayhem at Seattle stores as shoppers clear shelves pre-snow storm

"Who has the key to the liquor cabinet? I've got 25 people lined up over there!" yelled one worker at the store.

Shoppers were lined up down every aisle waiting to check out.

At Costco stores around the area, people stocked up in bulk, apparently specifically on liquor.

"Hat tip to the lady in front of me at Costco. 18 bottles of wine, 2 cases of Fremont IPA, & cherry tomatoes. Godspeed, ma'am," wrote MS Kalara on Twitter.

At Fred Meyer, shoppers described a "war zone" of "combat shopping."

I hope that's enough beer. This thing could last for several days.

Talking to a Seattle friend last night whose wife works at Fred Meyer. She came home shell-shocked. "This is why we have a full freezer and a generator, dear," I could hear him telling her in the background.

My SHTF buddies are laughing, but it's no joke - what happens in a real emergency?

When folks are out buying everything in sight before a storm, I focus on doing laundry and showering often. Gotta be clean with clean clothes when the power is out for days!

My best day at work in Seattle was spent looking out the window of our office building on 2nd and Spring, watching cars slide sideways toward Elliott Bay and taking bets on how many cars they would hit as they pinballed down the street.

I’m good for awhile without electricity, but it would suck.

I've had cans of food and a freezer full of pre-made meals since the fall. It's called common sense.

I run out of milk for coffee. Bread...in the freezer...imagine that.

I grew up on the Oregon Coast. The rest of the USA are a bunch of pansies when it comes to rain. You know how to spot a tourist in Western Oregon? They have an umbrella.

Our local (S.E. MO) is running an ad—shoppers going crazy—battling each other for milk then a cut to the weather staff laughing and predicting snow.

I live in Williamsburg Va for a year...same thing...

I was going to the store...not even a footprint in our complex. Went back into my condo.

The headlines next day...."Seven sleds sold at Country Hardware Store".

I am in eastern WA and that El Niño warm “winter” up to a week or so ago really fooled us. I was starting to get out my spring stuff and the motorcycles, etc. Now we are in moderate blizzard conditions and on-off single-digit temps. A late and fairly short winter but it does count for one!
