London Zoo say Melati was mauled to death by the male on their first encounter Asim, the male, had been kept in an adjoining enclosure prior to their meeting

The younger male killed Melati in an interaction which 'quickly escalated'

London Zoo's beloved female tiger Melati has been brutally mauled to death by her potential new mate while the two beasts were being introduced.

The zoo says 10-year-old Melati died Friday during her first encounter with Asim, a seven-year-old male who was shipped in from Denmark last month.

The two tigers had been kept in adjoining enclosures for 10 days so they could get used to one another, but their first interaction 'quickly escalated into a more aggressive interaction.'

The zoo says keepers intervened with loud noises, flares and alarms but were too late to save Melati.

It says staff are 'devastated by the loss of Melati, and we are heartbroken by this turn of events.'

Zoologists had hoped the two tigers would breed as part of a Europe-wide tiger conservation program for the endangered Sumatran subspecies.

The zoo's head tiger keeper Kathryn Sanders said last month: 'Asim arrived yesterday after catching the ferry from France and immediately made himself at home in his new, cosy den.

As a result of this tragedy, Asim is now the male tiger that most of the females want to mate with. sarc

The male was named Asim. Sounds like a name associated with the religion of peace. There’s your answer. We know how they “feel” about women!

Maybe Gillette needs to film a commercial for tigers.

> Suddenly, artificial insemination looks like a good idea.

Yeah, but who in their right mind is gonna volunteer to "collect" semen from a 600-pound aggressive tiger?

"Hey hold still, buddy, I just want to make ya feel good for a minute..."

Not me, man.

Nature doesn’t give a damn about leftist sensitivities.

Boo-frickin’-hoo.

“Asim, whose name means ‘Protector’ in Arabic, was moved to the zoo as a new mate for resident female, Melati.”

Okay. So this was NOT male toxicity. It was instead a culturally enriching example of inclusion and diversity.

But yes, Gillette really should do another commercial featuring this fella.

There's a lesson here. What are the odds that he strolled across the bridge from Malmö?

Sounds like the zoo keepers didn’t know what the hell they were doing. Some people should get fired.

This is what wild animals do. It’s nature. Animals don’t obey people rules.

Don’t know but my guess would be probably not, as the two would not be forced into close proximity of each other by Humans wanting them to get along and mate.....

Female would likely avoid the male completely if possible, and when she was ready to mate would the male smell and pursue her...

But that’s just conjecture on my part.

Only 10 days and then you just throw them together? What are these people idiots? How about a month of side by side cages. And then a month of putting the female in male cage INSIDE a smaller cage. And then sedating both tigers before removing any cage. And then and then and then...

I guess Asim wasn't into Cougars.

Listening to mating cats in the back yard could give you a clue. Sort of a love hate thing.
