Millennials prefer music from 20th century ‘golden age’ to the pop of today, research suggests

Research has suggested that modern music really isn’t as good as the old classics.

A study has found that golden oldies stick in millennials’ minds far more than the relatively bland, homogenous pop of today.

A golden age of popular music lasted from the 1960s to the 1990s, academics claimed.

Songs from this era proved to be much more memorable than tunes released in the 21st century.

Music from the vinyl era is still very popular among young people Scientists tested a group of millennials on their ability to recognise hit records from different decades.

The 643 participants, typically aged 18 to 25, maintained a steady memory of top tunes that came out between 1960 and 1999. In contrast, their memory of 21st-century songs from 2000 to 2015 – while higher overall – diminished rapidly over time.

My 18 year old and his friends like to try and stump me with 70s-80s music and if I know the title and group. I’m amazed at how much they know from that time period.

Same here! I used to pride myself on knowing all the 70's music when I was growing up. Now one of my kids knows far more about 70's music than I remember. And I lived it. lol

Love the voice and the music itself, but, man oh man, the lyrics! Kind of hard to take... Why did the father set his son on poor little Rose Connelly?

There’s a lot of “different” music today, that maybe college kids know about, but it’s not played much on the radio.

“I’m interupting it right now to send a link to my best friend, and to thank you! :-) “

Glad you’re enjoying it. It was such fun to see/hear my little (8 and 10 years old) niece and nephew belting it out on car trips in the ‘80s.

Here's another one, sort of in that same vein, that I really love. This version was done quite recently, though there are earlier ones that stretch way back: Hang Me, Oh Hang Me

Selling England is pretty darn good, but I'd have to give the edge to Foxtrot. My favorite song of all time - in any genre - is Supper's Ready. I still watch the live versions of it on YouTube frequently.

And to keep on topic with this thread, every time I listen to it, I think, who among today's pop and rap artists even know who Pythagoras is, let alone would include his name in the lyrics of a song?! These guys were in their early 20s when they wrote that song!

The Baby Boomers and "Greatest Generation" elites shipped all the blue collar manufacturing jobs overseas and then imported slave-wage foreigners to work the few that remained. They oversaw the cost of a college education reach six figures while mandating that every job that paid over $10 an hour require one.

Millennials did none of these things. They're just on the receiving end of the giant economic sh*t sandwich that their parents and grandparents gifted to them.

I'm part of the boomers, and I agree that it's worse for the more recent generations of Americans, but my brothers, boomers, were displaced into unemployment & hardship by the same forces you've decried. I knew a few people from my parent's generation that had to work around the same forces to stay afloat.

Your points are well made except for the broad blame. Maybe it's Eisenhower's military-industrial complex, maybe it's the world bankers, maybe it's control of mass media / television. I do agree America's social fabric is being manipulated toward it's extinction, and the manipulators have been at it throughout the "greatest generation's" and baby boomer's times. But just because the manipulators were of those generations shouldn't indict the whole of America's elders.

Ten times.

That’s how many times I’ve already listened to it... 8 to 10 times.

I’m sure I’ll listen to it another 8 to 10 times tomorrow! :-)

Love that your niece and nephew liked it, thanks.

I'm in my 60s. I'm a musician. I've been listening to music a while. The 80's were musically a cool time, with Psychedelic Furs, Romeo Void, Billy Idol, The Strawbs, etc. But today the major producers have hit upon a chord progression that they believe songs must be recorded with to sell, so you will hear it or a variant over and over.

What is also depressing about the present is the fact that hit songs for artists Brittany Spears, Taylor Swift, Ellie Golding, Robin Thicke, Jessie J, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Arianna Grande, Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, Pink, Leonna Lewis, Avril Lavine, Christina Aguilera, Kesha, The Backstreet Boys, Westlife, N-Sync, Adam Lambert and Will I Am are all written by the same two men. Max Martin and Lucasz Gottwald. The musicians and bands of the past had much more creative freedom.

Yep, Supper’s Ready and Watcher Of The Skies are my two favorites on Foxtrot.

Genesis first four albums are superb...they kinda lost me on everything after those. I remember being somewhat disappointed when The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway came out...funny though, that one seemed to be well liked among Genesis fans. I did like A Trick Of The Tail though.

A Trick of the Tail may be my all-time favorite album. Every song on it is classic.

That’s because their parents (us old folks) still listen to music from when music was music....
