I can discard another “My elders told me” piece of misinformation from 50 years ago. Ice water is OK.
Regarding the cold water discussion:
On about 4 occasions in my life, I have experienced sharp pain in my esophagus following the swallowing of ice-cold water on a very, very hot day. One of my sisters has reported same. Perhaps we are unusual.
The pain is very, very sharp but, mercifully, brief. I have interpreted it to be the result of very quick muscle contraction in response to the cold added to a very warm area. Analogous to what we called an “ice cream headache” when I was a kid. Young people now call it a “brain freeze”.
