Clive Swift, who played the exasperated husband of Hyacinth Bucket in the 1990s TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 82.

Swift, who spent ten years at the Royal Shakespeare Company before breaking into television, died at home after a short illness.

He played Richard Bucket opposite Dame Patricia Routledge in the sitcom, rolling his eyes as his on-screen wife tried to improve her social standing.

Swift, who was born in Liverpool in 1936, had been an actor for decades before achieving fame. “I could walk the street unrecognised, but all that changed with Keeping Up Appearances,” he said.

Always enjoyed watching that show - Sat. or Sun. evenings if I remember. Now “she” was one heck of an actress.

Except for the first "Our Rose" they were all great...but IMO Onslow and the second "Our Rose" were the best.

"I'm sitting here completely surrounded by no beer".

"I'm gonna become a nun."

Classic!

Also, did you know that the woman who played Hyacinth was also featured in "To Sir,With Love"? It was a small part but she was good there as well.

I would imagine that Richard and Onslow are sharing a pint about now.

But Richard is surely a bit ill at ease...worrying!

He was hen-pecked in “Barchester” too, and also in “Frenzy.”

RIP.

/My grandmother could have been Hyacinth’s doppleganger to a T. Mannerisms, gossiping, putting on airs and the dresses. There was also the Rose & Oslo types on her side. The show was like a family album.

Same here, only it was my mother. I remember once when her college roommate was visiting. These women were probably in their 50’s-60’s then and had remained close over the years - close enough where the roommate had no problem going into the kitchen to get a fork. When she sits back down at the table, my mother looks at the fork and laughs a little, “Oh, you got a salad fork. That’s not what you wanted, is it?” Way to go w/your friend, ma.

Oh, Fawlty Towers is hilarious with the greatest of all Pythons John Cleese as its star.

Basil berating the German tourists and beating his car with a branch - priceless!

“”Hyacinth was also featured in “To Sir,With Love””

Boy - that was so long ago, I have trouble remembering any of it except for Sidney Poitier...who we’d all like to forget after his politics became known. Funny how that happens!

That show had like 33 seasons. So much of the humor is dry and subtle - I love it.
