Clive Swift, who played the exasperated husband of Hyacinth Bucket in the 1990s TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 82.

Swift, who spent ten years at the Royal Shakespeare Company before breaking into television, died at home after a short illness.

He played Richard Bucket opposite Dame Patricia Routledge in the sitcom, rolling his eyes as his on-screen wife tried to improve her social standing.

Swift, who was born in Liverpool in 1936, had been an actor for decades before achieving fame. “I could walk the street unrecognised, but all that changed with Keeping Up Appearances,” he said.

“Keeping Up Appearances” was a little too slapstick for my taste, but their outtakes on youtube are priceless. Patricia flubs her lines and makes faces while Clive breaks into a helpless toothy grin; the actress portraying Elizabeth cannot control her laughter around Patricia’s ad libs, and Onslow & Daisy’s bloopers are a show unto themselves.

To show how untethered to the media I am, out of curiosity I googled Clive Swift, I saw his picture, and still have no clue who he is.

Although he may be known for other things I know him as the co-star of Keeping Up Appearances, one of the great Britcoms of the 70s/80s/90s.

RIP, Clive. Talk about playing the role of the long-suffering husband to perfection. My favorite was when he had a foot fungus that Hyacinth insisted he tell people was gout. The full episode: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5udu34

Richard Bucket:
[Hyacinth, still refusing to accept the "Athlete's Foot" diagnosis, is wrapping his infected foot in bandages] Do I... uh... do I really need that?

Hyacinth Bucket:
You do if you've got gout.

Richard Bucket:
Gout? But that's worse than a fungus infection!

Hyacinth Bucket:
Not in my book! Your gout is an affliction acceptable in the very highest circles. It comes from an excess of good living. Gout is practically a pedigree. [With finality] You have gout.

“Keeping Up Appearances” was a little too slapstick for my taste, but their outtakes on youtube are priceless.

IMO Britcoms are,to we yanks at least,an acquired taste. They range from the completely juvenile ("Bottom","The Young Ones") to the more cerebral ("Yes,Prime Minister") and lots of great ones in between.

I first got hooked on them in the 60s when I saw "Doctor In The House" on our local PBS station and have been a fan ever since...although the *most* recent stuff I've seen is pretty lame.

If you have some free time I'd encourage you to watch episodes of "Fawlty Towers" on youtube. It's considered by many to be the best Britcom of all time.

“”I’ve only seen him on tv as Richard and though I wished he’d have stood up to Hyacinth at times, Clive did a wonderful job playing the character Richard. So many laughs.””

Always enjoyed watching that show - Sat. or Sun. evenings if I remember. Now “she” was one heck of an actress.

I’ve only seen him on tv as Richard and though I wished he’d have stood up to Hyacinth at times,

I had always wished that he would start getting a little bit on the side with Elizabeth ...!
