With deep freeze still on, MN utility asks customers to turn down thermostats
Minnesota Star Tribune ^ | Jan 31, 2019 | Smith, Hughlett, and Reinan

"The brutal cold gripping Minnesota made itself felt in tens of thousands of living rooms Wednesday as Xcel Energy resorted to asking customers to turn their thermostats down to 63 degrees to conserve natural gas.

The request to Xcel’s more than 400,000 customers came as the utility strained in the sub-zero temperatures to keep up with heating demand.

And a few Minnesotans dealt with the nightmare of having no heat at all.

About 150 homes in the Princeton area, about an hour north of Minneapolis, lost natural gas service about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. In response, Xcel asked about 12,000 customers in nearby Becker, Big Lake, Chisago City, Lindstrom, Princeton and Isanti to turn down their thermostats to 60."

Will the gas company turn down the rates so we can conserve money?

I have a customer who runs a pallet manufacturing company in MN. HE is on a plan that they can turn off his power if in dire need. He got the call for the first time ever on Wednesday morning when it was -26. He had to send his employees home for the day. Now, he wants them to come in tomorrow to make up for lost production. He is one of the bigger wooden pallet producers in the upper Midwest. He pallets for companies like Birdseye, etc.

How is this possible for a country with so much natural gas? Because of the green socialists in Minnesota being true believers in the superiority of wind mill power and solar panels. How about some nuclear power plants that don’t produce the green house gases that natural gas power plants give off minuscule amounts of?

Look online there are a gazillion woodstoves to choose from. If you live in Minnesota and don’t have one you are not thinking straight.

This happened to my daughter in Michigan as well. Everyone in the area got a emergency tax for the gas company basically saying the same thing turn down your heat.

Texas had the same “brown out” problem in February 2011 when all the wind generated electricity went off-line because it was too cold. We were forced to buy power from “our good neighbors” in Mexico, who promptly charged us three times the going rate.

No coal! No nukes! No lights! No reserves, for when the wind doesn't blow, and sun doesn't shine. Everyone that switched to NG without sufficient capacity feeds that must supply on-demand draws to sustain spinning load, now knows.

If we just had in place the “Green New Deal”, i.e., no more natural gas and other fossil fuels—everything would be better, everyone would be safe and warm!!

Solar and wind are totally reliable energy sources, no problem. Just ask Occasional Cortex, that jack@ss-toothed manic moron. If Minnesotans were on purely solar and wind power right now, they would all be warm and cozy.

No need to build pipelines. Global warming will make the obsolete in a few years.

Now what would it be like with 23,000 electric cars plugged into the grid?

“Also in the summer when all the ac’s are on...rolling blackouts.”

Rolling blackouts don’t occur at 2AM when the cars are being charged.

How is it that Hydro Quebec was asking customers reduce draw to avoid a blackout?

I don’t think that 63 is terrible. I keep mine at 62 at all times in the winter, and wear warm clothing. I have a little space heater that I can turn on if I feel a little cold. My heating bill is really low, too. But, that’s me. I understand some people can’t tolerate the cold. My splurge is on a/c, because I can’t take the heat, but my bill is still lower than my neighbors.

when all the wind generated electricity went off-line because it was too cold.

Wind has problems with cold weather and can need generators to heat the gearbox oil. But the wind was not the main problem in TX in Feb 2011: https://www.texastribune.org/2011/02/03/the-rolling-chain-of-events-behind-texas-blackouts/
