(reply #18.)] January 31. The illustrious Prescott died suddenly at Boston. I shall not miss the highly respectable volumes of Philip the Second that perish unborn. I am tired of history in dress coat and patent-leather pumps, Clio in hoops and powder.

Thomas Wentworth Higginson, February 1859
WORCESTER, February, 1859
George [William] Curtis lectured here last week. With the most delicious elocution we have except perhaps Wendell Phillips's and a fascinating rhetoric and an uncorrupted moral integrity, he showed yet a want of intellectual vigor and training which will always prevent him from being a great man. Yet he perfectly fascinated everybody.

February 1. Newspapers still busy with predictions of European war; France and Austria to fight for Italy. Doubtful. Neither can afford the luxury.

France and Austria to fight for Italy. Doubtful. Neither can afford the luxury. That usually doesn't stop countries from doing it anyway.

February 2. Hoffman tells me K. Armstrong is investigating spiritualism again with Peter Porter, and that the lady who is now working the telegraphic lines to the invisible world for their benefit (one Mrs. Hayden) produces sundry marvelous phenomena. I query whether society was in a more or less enlightened and healthy state of morals and intelligence a couple of hundred years ago when this wonder-working female would have been whipped at the carts tail, or yet more severely dealt with.

Wow, he didn’t like spiritualists much.
