Don’t judge a book by its cover. Especially when that book is a scrapyard.
One of the most incredible collections of vintage Indian motorcycles and memorabilia was recently discovered on the property of RJ&C Metal Fabricators in Phoenix, after its owner Rickey Jensen passed away.
There, in a locked shed behind the stacks of barrels, beams, random machinery and broken down cars were 15 Indian motorcycles, several of the brand’s bicycles and dozens of signs, clocks and promotional items.
According to Mecum Auctions, Jensen mostly kept it a secret, and only one or two other people had ever even known about it. But now the world does.
All of the bikes and most of the collection sold for well over $500,000 combined at the Mecum Las Vegas event on Thursday night, where it was the star of the show. But a few of the knickknacks are still available, including several Indian wall clocks and a Chief Scooting Star children’s scooter.
Among the treasures that found new homes were a rare 1908 Single Camelback that sold for $82,500, a 1929 Ace Four that went for $88,000 and a red and white 1941 Four that brought the hammer down at $71,500.

I have a 72 BMW R-75/5, its called the “toaster” because of the stainless steel side panels on the tank. It runs like a dream.
She still has room on her legs for more tattoos. The pickers are doing good business. Their show is on like the Twenty something season or something like that. And I know they have at least two locations.
I like it.
Classic anything is higher potential target.
My old jeeps will need some kind of anti-theft (disable electrical) and some tracking. I’ve read of some sensible solutions and have a few ideas of my own.
Amazon has a tracking unit for around 50 bucks that is highly reviewed.
If someone drove off in my old Willys right now, they’d probably give up about a mile or two. It isn’t really roadworthy plus it’s very loud. A lot of rattling still.
Top speed, maybe 50. 55 downhill.
A few weeks ago I had it on my street and it quit on me at the top the closest hill. An electrical problem.
Anyway as light as it is and me jumping out to keep the momentum going, I got it pointed back down the hill and home.
It coasted so well and quiet. Glad there was no power anything. I made it right to my driveway.
I traced the wiring in a couple of minutes and was running again.
There is Lojack but pricey the last time I checked.
My uncle had a basement full of Indians that he lovingly cared for. Everything from bikes to 1990’s era ‘moped’ looking things to a couple of big chiefs, one with a sidecar that he’s drive up occasionally and take us kids for a ride (one at a time, of course).
Sadly, he passed, and my aunt spent her remaining years living quite well. Go fig.
(Not that I’d have wanted one, you’ll kill yourself on one of those things. Suicide shifter and all. :P)
I’m occasionally tempted to buy one of the new ones, some of them look pretty cool, but then I’m reminded of a friend of mine who recently bought a bike and is now experiencing the joys of physical therapy and ‘maximum expected improvement’.
So, maybe not. I think I’ll stick to 4 wheels, and my chief can be chief Pontiac.
I have an xt250 as well. The speedometer is not accurate at all. Witb all of Yamaha’s excellent engineering why couldn’t they have designed an accurate speedometer?

I heard the speedo was like 5mph slower than actual speed. Mine seemed to be within 3 mph accurate when riding along with another bike.
Excellent engineering is right on the XT and basically the same motor since the 1980s, just a bit refined with fuel injection, and at around 75 miles per gallon is really hard to beat. Extremely reliable. I will keep mine stock except for skid plate and a rear rack.
Internets says he has $5 million net worth with $500K annual salary.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Frank Fritz – one of the co-hosts of the History Channel’s
popular American Pickers television show that originated in nearby LeClaire –
has pleaded guilty to OWI following a July incident in which police say he
drove the wrong way on Interstate 80 under the influence of Xanax and alcohol.
The plea deal, which was entered in Iowa District Court in Davenport on March 1,
is a deferred judgement, which will require Fritz to be on unsupervised probation
for one year, pay a fine of $625 plus court costs and to complete a substance
evaluation program and follow any recommended treatment.
Fritz was arrested on July 30, 2017 at I-80 mile marker 282, which is near
the Walcott exit.

Hidden kill switches work well. One thing about older stuff and classics, they can be FIXED and most were made to be repaired. Not so much with later model cars where people drive them around 160k miles and then throw them away.
I take that back, if I recall the comments I heard was the speedo was about 5mph faster than actual speed.
Try it with a gps. Mine is 5 mph off. Other than that I do like it for quick trips around town and some off roading once in a while.

Btw, that’s why many say they prefer an analog type speedos. But then again, even they can have issues. I have in the past. Actually, I’m surprised there isn’t a recall on that or at least an advisory for a fix. Otherwise I really agree about their engineering, for the money it’s pretty darn good.
