As stated, I am seeking a simple white, flavorless pill that I can occasionally take instead of consuming more actual pain reliever medication. Why? So that I don't become too reliant on pills to get through the day. So that I don't continue building new thresholds of tolerance, requiring even more of that same med.
Such pain relievers can be rough on the organs of the body. Other reasons: So that I remain more clear headed during the days, during the times I need to drive, during the times when I'm expected to engage in conversation with people.
Causes of pain: Ever since my foot surgeries (Sub Talar Fusions in both feet) I have experience occasional pain in the toes and soles of feet. The doctor calls this peripheral neuropathy, something that happens to a percentage of patients after these procedures. Sometimes it's just a twinge of pain around the toe nailbed, other times, I am awakened at 3.AM feeling as though someone poured kerosene on the soles of my feet, then lit a match. When that happens, I have learned to just stand up for a while, maybe walk around a bit. Thankfully, it's not all the time. Perhaps a few nights out of the month.
I have been prescribed Gabapentin for it. At first, after researching Gabapentin online, I refused to take it at all. I read that one side effect was Weight Gain. I'm thinking; that's the last thing I need assistance with, gaining more weight. Then I read further, and to many patients who have used it, the gain happens only by giving in to an increased appetite. Feeding one's face, as it were. It's not as with certain other drugs, (Prednisone!) where the body begins to store fat in different ways than before after long term use. So I'm willing to try it for a while, in small doses. Gaba is helpful, but leaves me sort of woozy in the morning. It might be about Noon before that soft cloudy sensation is finally gone.
I'm willing to have a small container of placebo pills as a 'Go To First' measure. To keep from ingesting so much that will depress the system, and make breathing somewhat more labored. Yes. I know it's only mind games and a form of Self Hypnosis.
I have searched online, and was surprised at how difficult it is to find what I want. I don't want empty capsules that I have to work at filling with something. I don't want sugar pills, that will remind me of Tic Tacs. I seek a plain, white, boring pill that is as close to flavorless as is possible. Any suggestions?
You are an inspiration for those of us in our 60’s.
You have a healthy lifestyle and sense a great joy for many things in life. Attitude and outlook does matter.
Nice list. I take some of these things for various reasons.
Do you know that your doctor can prescribe these supplements for you? Which makes them deductible, just like drugs.
My doc prescribes 11 supplements for me to take daily. I actually looked them up, then he looked them up on WebMD and said OK, can do. He gives me regular prescription forms for them. Not at all sure that other doctors will do that for you, as they are financially hooked into pharmaceutical companies. But they can.
My only real health prob is my vision, for which I take lutein and zeaxanthin, which have improved my vision measurably.
A good source for research is Oregon State University web site...Linus Pauling Institute is there. Pauling originated the idea of curing disease with high-dose supplements. Back in...the ‘70s, as I recall. Genius.
Thanks for your kind words. :)
Get an ice machine. Cold on neuropathy is a great relief. If your dose of gaba is making you woozy take a half a Bose with a Tylenol
I have peripheral neuropathy. I’ve had 2 different Podiatrists tell me to drink a glass (8 oz) of tonic water in the evening. Tonic water contains Quinine, which is what they used to recommend for nerve pain. However the price of pills went way up because of its use for Malaria.
I also take a low dose of Gabapentin but definitely notice an improvement with the tonic water. No, I don’t add any gin. /g
I’ve tried Turmeric in the past but didn’t notice much effect for me.
M&Ms
Short term relief, I agree with Magnesium. Transdermal, with foot soaks or oil of magnesium, is great for pain and the stress that comes with it.
Long term, whole-food, plant based diet with reasonable fasting. I have seen near miraculous relief the pain of arthritis, from back pain, from migraines, with 5:2 fasting or alternate day fasting or even the 16:8 hour fasting regime.
And I think placebos show what an amazing tool our brain is for our health, if we can learn to access it’s abilities.
Relief Factor. Look it up on the internet. It is a long term application. It does not work immediately. You have to keep taking it every day.
That’s wonderful.
If you’re healthy enough and can find someone who is very well trained, suspension fitness (going upside down in a hammock structure) is great because it decompresses the spine and hip joints so things can sometimes pop back into place.
I can sympathize with you on the pain of periphal neuropathy. Mine is idiopathic, I’m not diabetic and don’t have health issues that have caused it.
I was prescribed Gabapentin and chose not to take it due to the many side effects and no real guarantee it would be effective.
I have found Capsaicin gel is working for me. I apply it all over my feet and it seems to desensitize the area. I apply it at bedtime.
Occasionally I have to use it a couple of times but that’s all. Until recently I got it at Wal-Mart but they quit selling it so I have to order it from Amazon. Capsaicin, 0.025% and 10% menthol. It comes in a tube with a sponge applicator so you don’t have to get it on your hands. It seems to be a simple solution with no side effects. I did find the full strength Capsaicin was too strong and painful. This, maybe because of the menthol, doesn’t burn.

suggestion — find a pill that has same color and looks like the medication pill
Yep. Still looking.
Meanwhile, I received many good and affordable suggestions today from FR. I’m very happy with the outcome and responses.
Unlike with Pokemon, I could not catch’em all, as I’m in and out of my apartment today. Each one is greatly valued.
well that’s a fair point, having a lot of love action helps with a lot of things...............
Altoids, wintergreen for stomach.
Try thinking of it as phantom pain in a foot you don’t have and persuade yourself that a new foot has been attached, pain-free.
Works every time.
Acupuncture by a Chinese trained Doctor fo Traditional Chinese medicine with at least ten to fifteen years of practice. It will blow you away.
Not if someone else gives you the meds and it looks the same. ;))
NARC capsules have a white powder inside a clear capsule. I don’t think they would do you any harm and they might be good for your eyes. If you want a white tablet, you could go with magnesium or calcium.
- NAC, stupid autocorrect!
One more thing - make sure that they give you the generic placebos.
