Native American elder Nathan Phillips, in his own words
Native American elder Nathan Phillips, who has made headlines everywhere after a video showed him in a face-off with a Catholic school student in front of the Lincoln Memorial, spoke at length with CNN the day after the incident. Phillips described what he felt was hatred coming from the young people in the crowd, who are pupils at Covington Catholic School in Kentucky and who had traveled to the nation's capital to attend the March for Life rally, also held Friday. The interview was conducted Saturday after the video went viral. Since the interview, the diocese in charge of the school has denounced the students' actions, a lawmaker has defended them and the boy in the video, Nick Sandmann, has denied characterizations of his and his classmates' behavior and said he was simply standing in front of Phillips to let him know he wouldn't be baited into an altercation.

I remember that. But I’m thinking this was someone else, who was caught lying and then quibbled about the difference between ‘Vietnam Vet’ and ‘Vietnam Era Vet’.
It wasn’t so high profile a person, but did make the news.
Also, there are the yearly average of 300,000+ Army, Air Force and Navy/Marines who served in Europe and the Med, facing the Soviets and Warsaw Pact, during the time of the Vietnam war are considered as “Vietnam Era Veterans.”

Still pretty tight for Mr Phillips. Bombing of the north ended in 72 and MC drawdown was in earnest in 72-73. Very few Marines remained in 74 and only the helo crews came back in 75 for the evacuation. I was in Cubi Pt, Philippines on stby with a herc crew but we were never called out.
Maybe you missed it. MSM is now admitting he was never in Viet Nam.
The Wiki on him appears to have been changed, too:
