Brilliantly clear (but very cold) sky over SouthEast US after rains earlier in the day.
Very good viewing, for a few minutes outside in the cold air.
The moon busted out of the clouds here in Phoenix. It was a bloody fight and it’s covered in red but it’s given it’s light to the stars around it.
Totality here now, SF Bay Area. Recent showers and clearing clouds.
Using a real camera with long focal length and image stabilization. Nice picture due to long automatic exposure - long enough to bypass the weird my eye sees.
The moon is completely dark here in New Hampshire, with 2 degrees F and blowing wind.
Lunar eclipses have played a role in world history
May 1453 , a partial lunar eclipse in which a blood red crescent was visible to the besieging Ottoman troops
The noon is powerful symbol in Islam, ALLAH was originally a moon deity
They viewed the eclipse a omen would conquer Constantinople . The city was stormed a week later
In 1502 Christopher Columbus was stranded on Jamaica waiting for a rescue ship. He was deponent on local natives for food
Friction developed with natives who cut Columbus and Spaniards off
Starving and desperate Columbus found in his almanac a reference to a total lunar eclipse on Feb 29/Mar 1 (it was a leap year) Summoning native chief stated that Christian god was angered by their treatment of the Spaniards
He would make the moon disappear that night
At the appointed time the earths shadow began to darken the
moon until it completely disappeared
The Natives were completely frightened and begged Columbus to restore the moon, they would provide him with food and supplies
Columbus said would contact the Christian god and ask him to restore the moon
Columbus went into his cabin and timed the eclipse with an hourglass At appointed time came out and said had interceded with Christian god to restore moon. The earth’s shadow began to recede and the full moon appeared... ..
The coyotes are yelping like crazy.
Wonder how it looks on the Moon... is the Moon red? The Earth?
One day, sigh...
That’s better.
Clear skies in Jackson, Tennessee! BEAUTIFUL blood red moon!
Been watching from the skylights in my attic.
Clear night in eastern PA. Great view, but my neck hurts!
...and coyotes howling here as well!
Not hearing any animals here. Very cold so maybe the outdoor dogs have been brought in. Not many coyotes here.
Beautiful sight. Hope I make it to the next one.
At approximately 12:00 Midnight, I stepped outside to look at it first hand. It was almost due overhead (I’m in Glen Burnie, Md., just south of Baltimore) and would have been impressive...but the weather is bitterly cold and windy. So I came back in to watch the eclipse televised, in comfort, and with the chance to interact with all the people around the world watching the same astronomical event.
This is the best lunar eclipse I have ever seen.
“cold” in my case is -10...no thanks
Excellent graphics! Thank you.
I saw the “paired corner” re-appearance of the light, but didn’t realize the “why” of it until your link.
It’s Beautiful
shadow is blue here in Mississippi
Well my hubby went outside and spotted the red moon. He pointed it out to me. Dull red and small.
