Manager Runs 263-Lap Half Marathon in Shirt and Tie to Keep His Promise to His Workers

David Stephenson, store manager of Cedar City Deseret Industries, promised his team that if they met their sales goals, he would run at least 200 loops around the roundabout outside of their office—and he would do it in his work clothes: a shirt, tie, and slacks.

“Where I work, we train individuals to get better jobs,” he explained. “They all face different challenges in their lives, so I’m always looking for any opportunity to show them that you can do hard things, even if some thing seem impossible—or not the smartest thing to do, in my case—you can still accomplish hard things,” Stephenson told Runner’s World.

His Cedar City, Utah, team accomplished their goals, so he had to make good on his promise. And he took it one step further. Rather than doing the 200 laps, he decided to make it the equivalent of a half marathon, which ended up being 263 loops in the .05-mile roundabout.

Stephenson isn’t a running novice—he is currently training for a 48-hour race in April, in which he will attempt to break 100 miles—or new to logging some nontraditional miles. His local running club is always looking for offbeat ideas for runs and ways to earn a record on Strava, and have created events like roundabout half marathons or running as many 2.5-mile loops as possible on a trail in 24 hours.

So Stephenson had tackled the roundabout half marathon once before, but the distance in his last attempt was .10 miles. The one he completed for his team was a much smaller circle requiring way more laps.

Did he wear running shoes? That’s all that really matters.

Good for him. He leads by example unlike most people who dont walk the talk. But if Stephenson is the chubby guy in the picture and claims to be a runner. I have a hard time believing this. Maybe he runs to the buffet table is what is meant by “runner”..

It says he ran about 13 miles. Are you suggesting the writer is making it up, because the subject is heavy-set? Stout people run marathons ... not super-fast marathons like emaciated Kenyans, but they run 26 miles.

25 feet is about my running distance some days. I’ve tried to get back on the exercise track again.

My wife did a 12 or whatever K race this morning in Charlotte. It’d take me a day or so at my speed.

Whew, was scared he wasn’t wearing slacks.

The the weather was a balmy 7 degrees the day of the run. Stephenson started his laps around 7:15 a.m., so he could get a head start before his colleagues got in around 8:00. He bundled up with plenty of warm clothes on under his promised shirt, tie, and slacks

Maybe not as large as you suspect?
