Sending Out Military Patrols Is Like Sending Out Targets for Attack and Should Be Stopped

Maybe military patrols made sense hundreds of years ago, but no longer. We have other means of gathering information that do not require sending military patrols out as easy targets for terrorists to ambush!

That’s a nice opinion. Do you have any expertise to back it up?

If you don’t patrol - you don’t control. The problem is that ALL we do is patrol. And we refuse to let patrols use the supporting arms that they should have available to them.

Why not just disband the entire DoD leaving no targets whatsoever?

More to patrolling than just patrolling. Winning hearts and minds, gathering HUMIT, looking for things that have changed, assessing the attitude of the locals. All this can help a unit avoid or prepare for an attack/ambush. All this can help take big dawgs out of play. Lots more to it than just walking around with guns... Drones can’t talk to the honchos or provide medical assistance for a kid who needs stitches or a new mama with a sick little. Gotta have boots on the ground.

Russians got their asses handed to them in Afghanistan because they didn’t patrol enough. Conscripts sucked too.

“Maybe military patrols made sense hundreds of years ago, but no longer.”

I’m not a military man but I’d think our submarines ought to leave port; our blue water surface ships must get out in the blue water once in awhile.

And our airplanes should take off and fly around in the wild blue yonder. Yes, there is danger involved.

Patrols in Afghanistan have always been conducted with the intent of drawing fire. It’s how we find and separate the fighters from the rest of the population.

Sorry, totally disagree.

You only control the ground that you walk on is a very true saying in the Infantry.

And I would guess the other means are also being used.

With opinions like this you should start your own blog, pimp it here, and get humblegunned from a distance.

If the area can’t be patroled, you don’t control it. Time to pack up and go home.

And, while you are at it, be sure to confine cops to the police station. We wouldn’t want any of them to take risks either.

We believe some people to be stupid and some of them keep talking and give us enough information so we know damn good and well they are stupid.

Has this author ever grasp the concept of serch and destroy missions, or that those who are trained to speak the local languages actually talk to people while out there gathering information?

Then there is some kind of implied concept that those other means of gathering data that he alludes to are not also still utilized to form a much better picture of events.

What specific “military patrols” are you protesting? Do you have examples of current situations? Do you suppose that some “military patrols” are scouts, doing recon, or special ops?

How do you suggest we replace the intel value provided by “military patrols”?

You have an excellent point. Our young men and women simply should not be in harms way. There is a solution to keep the patrols, as I think they are quite valuable, yet save American lives and cost less.

The solution would be to outsource all of DoD to the Chinese. For this opportunity I bet they’d gladly lease all of our military facilities and weapons systems. Give this idea to AOC and she’d snap it up in a New York minute.
