Here's a live version. The album version just a lot better quality.

Wake y'all up...

I must say-I am a Drum and Bugle Corps fan from way back in the day, and played myself...of all the tunes that I both heard and played, there was none-NONE-that I liked more than Malaguena.

That.

Is.

A.

Smoking.

Hot.

Piece.

Just wow. I was with a band that played as close to this version as we could get it, and it was a kicking tune. Just made you hot.

I have never heard this live version before...just loved it! Had a big grin on my face listening to it.

Thank you. Made my night!

Malaguena is a great song. I have versions by Charo (she is actually a talented guitarist), Gypsy Queens, Ritchie Valens and “Flamenco Guitar: Spanish Tapas Bar, Vol. 2” which I bought in Spain some years ago.

This Kenton brass version leaves me cold, however.

I’m a bit of an Art Pepper fan. He was with Kenton for a bit, but he (in his autobiography admitted this) left the band because he was starting to slide, being addicted to heroin. He said it would not be fair to Kenton, being the great band that he was.

But Art Pepper, greatest alto sax that ever lived, gave his very best when in that band.

Saw Kenton and his orchestra three times in the early 70s, including a memorable Spring Prom my senior year in college. Love Kenton’s lush style of music and play his albums often.

I LOVE STAN KENTON AND ALL THE WONDERFUL JAZZ PEOPLE WHO SURROUND HIM.

Today’s music lovers have no idea how great music was back then.

This is the version of choice in the DoodleBob household.I'm happy to report the little DoodleBobs saw a tribute band performance and we're hooked thereafter.

I launched a post on The Who's latest tour yesterday. What I forgot to mention was that Kenton is an equal favorite, and presents an equal molten blitzkrieg live act as the Ooo except with jazz and brass. As one poster on YouTube said, "The original heavy metal."

It sounds like a marching band at half time.
Malaguena was one of the first pieces I learned
on guitar. It is ill suited for jazz.
