1. David Steven Bell Is Seen in the Video Shoving the Girl Away From Him Before Punching Her in the Face, Knocking Her Out & Down to the Ground
David Steven Bell can be seen in the video, initially posted to Instagram by an unidentified person, in an argument with a group of young girls outside of the Asheville Mall. You can watch the video above. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 12. Bell is white and most of the girls in the video are black. It is not clear what occurred before the video started.
In the video, Bell can be heard yelling to the girls to “break it up.” As other girls yell at him, one can be heard asking, “who is he?” Bell walks menacingly at the girls and they appear to back off. One girl then pushes Bell in the back, barely shifting his balance.
As the girl walks toward Bell, he shoves her backward, sending her into a metal pole and nearly to the ground. The girl gets back up and Bell punches with a closed fist, knocking the girl out and down to the ground. The other girls then run away screaming as the video ends.
Online jail records show that Bell is 6 foot 5 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds.
According to the Asheville-Citizen Times, the incident occurred about 7 p.m. at the Asheville Mall. Police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse told the newspaper that an off-duty officer who was already at the mall arrested Bell after the incident. The girl declined medical treatment and was not taken to the hospital, Hallingse told the Citizen-Times.

The fact that she's alive and declined medical attention indicates he didn't hit her as hard as he could have. Shoving her away just resulted in her charging back, so it was time to increase the level of force.

Did she get back up and come at him? If so, she played a stupid game and won first prize.
What are the guys options? He’s fresh out of handcuffs.
If this is true - he should get a “Get out of jail free card”.
I’m inclined to believe him. Why else would anyone else wade into a feral cat fight?
In that particular case I ran into, it was some rural white folks. I avoid the urban areas, too, for the most part. Since Barack was elected.
Having had a couple of experiences the past few years, I’m more cautious in both areas these days.
None if it would have occurred were it not for one gal who was incredibly-stupid, a petty thief and liar, or all three.
I perform the same type of transactions dozens and dozens of times in multiple cities, in multiple locations around me and there’s never a problem of any sort.
Because, for the overwhelming part, these areas know what they’re doing. Once I ran into a new clerk; easily-rectified.
It appears when he went out that he put himself in a position to protect a woman and child with their backs against the wall.
It seems by his tweet that they were indeed his family which if true changes the analysis.
If it were my daughter that charged at him like that,
I’d be more pissed off at her for such incredible stupidity than with the guy who was apparently protecting his family.
I must’ve watched the video at least 20 times now. It can look different each time, depending on the lens we’re looking through.
Now more info is available, and I’ve changed my mind: He shouldn’t have been pushing and shoving anyone, either.
If the woman and child were only bystanders and he was alone, not protecting anyone, why was he pushing anyone around? Did something happen before the video begins?
Watching the video again: The kids are standing around talking with each other loudly. They’re not even looking at him until he appears and yells, “Break it up!” and starts pushing people around. Then the kids react by yelling back, laughing, running away screaming, or (as the one girl does) pushing him from behind. He shoves her when she’s arguing with him. She jumps back up and comes at him, and he punches her.
Someone posted at the link that he has some problems resulting from head trauma and may have been startled by the noise of the kids (?). If that info is true, the video looks very different.
Right now, the only thing we know for sure is this: that 11yo is one tough little girl. :-0
