The superbug that infected nearly a dozen Americans who recently underwent weight-loss surgery at a Tijuana hospital had
a particularly nasty genetic mutation that set off alarm bells
after patients began showing up in hospitals and doctors officers with painful wounds.(Emphasis mine)
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel warning this week, notifying the public
that 11 Americans who traveled to Tijuana hospitals for weight-loss surgery had become infected
with drug-resistant pseudomonus aeruginosa infections during their stays.

One Weird Trick To Lose Weight And Hunger Quickly
When is NOW going to take to the streets to complain about back alley weight loss centers and barbaric butchery?
Women shouldn’t have to risk their lives to lose weight economically.
Happens to me everytime I visit 'Taco Hell'
.. .. T I K
Doctors HATE this money-saving procedure...
Yikes!
Behold a pale horse, and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hell was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with plague and by the wild beasts of the earth....
Really sad. They are doing something to improve their lives, they went where they could afford the surgery, and this happens.
The risk with leaving the USA for medical treatment is that doctors are gods elsewhere. They cant be sued. It is a protection for our patients here.
Elective surgery in Tijuana? I’ll pass. Make that ANY kind of surgery in TJ.
Anyone who elects surgery in Tijuana may not be smart enough to live.
Maybe Darwin was right.
I believe they are called "medical tourists".
Surgery is offered at about 1/3 the cost in the States.
When not covered by U.S. Healthcare insurance, some see this as the only medical option.
International medical care doesn't have the same legal malpractice protections as found in the States.
There are two sides to this, which makes it tough for those trying to get help on a budget. You are completely right, and it's sad that they were trying to do something to improve their health and this happened. However, I wouldn't even drink the water in Tijuana. I'm surprised that anyone is desperate enough to try elective surgery there. I'd choose to keep the excess weight (even with all those risks).
I know of someone who went south of the border to get their gallbladder removed.
The “doctor” did a sham operation, but the patient thought her gallbladder was removed.
She showed up a few week later at a US hospital. She was surprised that her gallbladder was still there.
Surgery in Mexico? I’m sure there are some good surgeons, but how can you be sure? So, NO THANKS.
Tijuana?
I wouldn’t take a dump there.
And sure a hell wouldn’t drink the water.
God invented nukes for everything south of the US Border.
Rates right up there with Truck Stop Sushi...Mm get some.
If we truly had a free-market healthcare system nobody would need to go overseas.
Here is the thing. People hear from dozens or more of people who had various surgical procedures in Mexico. Tijuana really does have clean new clinics and lots of nurses and good doctors. So the person decides to go for it because its 1/3 the cost of their home town. So many other people are fine and happy after.
What you dont hear is that when a patient dies, its kept quiet. The doctor is still advertising online afterward. No one knows, and in Mexico bribes are everything.
What I did for one of my surgeries is to shop in other states and did find a great surgeon in Nevada with beside manner experience and success rates who charged less than in Beverly Hills. It was even less with travel and hotel.
Getting medical attention in Mexico is not very bright.
And , hundreds of migrants walking, chain-fashion, through water, as the caravans are doing, goes way beyond stupid. Can anyone imagine what goes on in the water by some people, who do not have hygiene rated very highly in importance... it has to be one of the most dangerous parts of the journey.
Well, when anyone can buy antibiotics anywhere (as in Mexico) it’s no surprise that resistant strains will develop.
