Shirley Boone, the wife of legendary 1950’s singer Pat Boone, has died. She was 84.

Shirley passed away peacefully on Friday morning at the pair’s home in Beverly Hills after suffering complications from vasculitis, which she had contracted less than a year ago.

In her final moments, Shirley was surrounded by her husband of 65 years and the couple’s four daughters, Cherry, Lindy, Debby and Laury, all of whom were by her bedside singing hymns to her as she passed.

My condolences to Pat Boone. A decent man and an honest and true lover of America.

“by her bedside singing hymns to her as she passed”

Exactly how it was for my mom, only it was just me singing the hymns.

If I left her room, I would hear her calling out, so I stood there for several hours just singing to her.

Once in a while I’d lean in and hug her the best I could, lay my face against hers and tell her how much I love her.

As a teenager I often kidded Pat Boone about being a square. Later in life I wish I had been more like him as a youngster. I would have avoided a lot of self inflicted pain. RIP.

It’s going to be hard for him, they were together for so long. They had heaven on earth

Not many rock stars live to age 65!

“it’s something that can make 5 minutes seem like an eternity”

If I started singing at a family member’s death bed they would start whispering,”Lord, take me home.”.

>>I doubt that there are many rock stars who have stayed married 65 years.

That marriage dates to 1953, we are talking about the cusp of rock and roll.

The “old guard” R&B, jump blues, rock and rollers are mostly dead today (few even reached age 65) and only a few of the rockabilly upstarts (from Sun Records and other labels) are still alive today.

He is gratuitously despised by hedonistic musicians.

Is he perfect? Definitely not. (Who is?) But he is not the Devil Incarnate for merely doing mainstream versions of others’ songs.

It does not make him a racist, no matter what they say (and they say a lot).

I actually think his more questionable conduct had to do with Rick Barry and the ABA.

I wish him well in his time of grief.

And few of them lived as clean a life, and fewer still had a single marriage of that longevity.

Good Lord. That is amazing. And that family, and that man deserve that. What a blessing, to go out like that.

true.

Cab Calloway married in 1953 and stayed married up to his death 1994 (at age 87).

Louis Jordan married 5 times and died at age 67.
Roy Brown only lived to be 56.
Amos Milburn only lived to be 53.

Roy Orbison only lived to be 52.

Lloyd Price, who claimed to be "the true king of the fifties" is still alive. He will turn 86 in a few weeks.

While not exactly a rock, R&B or jump blues artist, Vera Lynn, who is definitely Old Guard, will turn 102 in a couple of months.

Lawdy, Miss Clawdy--Lloyd Price (1952)

Hollywood Square Dance--Vera Lynn & Anne Shelton (1949)

I saw Cab Calloway perform at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood in 1991. I was probably among the last of his listeners to sing along as he performed Minnie the Moocher. For 60+ years, he always invited the audience to repeat each line of the refrain after he sang it.

I saw him in movies and on tv. I saw his daughter (who’d done his act with him for years) after his passing.

I was reading his autobiography at a point but set it aside and didn’t get back to it. It is an autographed copy and so I don’t travel out of my home with it.
