I never heard of such a thing.
Could have been capsicum / spices burning
I guess we have to ban fish now.
I note from the story that the medical examiner had not yet made a determination about cause of death. I would not be surprised if something else was involved. If this kid's allergy was this severe, the family would probably have had some close calls over the years and would have been on guard.

Me either, where just the scent caused such an extreme reaction.
Similar things have happened before.

His mom carried a nebulizer machine with her and it had always worked in past episodes (as I read in other reportage on this), but it didn’t help in this instance.
The grandmother is a murderer. /s
“I dont die from smelling fish, cooking or otherwise but sometimes I think I may.”

Come to think of it - if you’ve ever smelled Lutefusk, that could probably finish a totally healthy guy off on the spot!
They might be unrelated.
Maybe he had a seizure caused by other factors, and the only thing people noticed was the smell of fish.
Something Fishy.
He’s had 11 years of smelling this same dish at grandma’s so there is more to the story.
Garrison Kiellor’s comment about lutefisk was the best; “it’s like eating boiled phlegm”.
My wife is highly allergic to fish and nearly died after her throat swelled up on one occasion. She lost consciousness and it was touch and go. Only a quick intubation at the hospital saved her. The doctor told her to not even touch the lid of a can of tuna.
But this sounds a little difficult to believe... my guess is that he somehow injected a small amount. Anyone who has kids knows that they can find a way to get into just about anything.
Oh, YUCK. I was drinking egg nog when I read that...
Overheated oil makes me cough and gag.
If a single childs life is spared, its worth it!
