Daryl Dragon, the hat-wearing musician familiar to 1970s music fans as half of the bestselling duo the Captain & Tennille, died Tuesday in Prescott, Arizona at age 76.

Dragon’s ex-wife, Toni Tennille, “was with him as he took his last breath,” said Harlon Boll, a spokesperson for the singer. In a statement, Tennille said, “He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly. I was at my most creative in my life when I was with him.”

Dragon died of renal failure, according to Boll.

It does seem like a passing of a generation has begun.

Loved their music in the 70s. He was a very talented arranger as well. Worked for Elton John, the Beach Boys, the Carpenters.

Anybody know why they got divorced - I mean the REAL reason (usually hard to know).

Sadly, the Captain passed away while waiting to perform at the never ending Aretha Franklin memorial.

Don’t know, but the article said they were married 39 years and remained friends. After 39 years you would think they would just stick it out. But that kind of longevity is to be congratulated.

A touch of irony; Toni Tennille divorced her husband of 39 years in 2014, as his health declined, then dished the dirt on him for a national TV audience, as part of her tell-all autobiography. Hey, anything to sell a few more books: https://www.today.com/popculture/toni-tennille-reveals-personal-reason-why-she-divorced-daryl-dragon-t85916

But at the time of her passing, Toni was there at the bedside and made sure she had a statement for the press. Think I’m beginning to see why he had “intimacy” issues with her. Daryl Dragon was reportedly working on his own book at the time of his death. Too bad he didn’t get a chance to finish it.
