Tom Brady overestimated himself and lost $5 million
NY Post ^ | January 1, 2019 | Anthony Barstow

Tom Brady bet on himself this season and lost big.

As part of a series of team-friendly deals the three-time MVP has taken from the Patriots, Brady had $5 million in performance bonuses built into his contract for 2018, and he will receive exactly none of that money.

Brady was in line to receive $1 million for finishing in the top five in the league in each of passer rating, completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown passes and passing yards, according to contract data from Spotrac.com. He failed to accomplish any of those.

In a hard capped league performance clauses are dangerous for the team. Best to not have a lot of them.

Complete hogwash. The fact is his wife makes a lot more than any NFL player, so he doesn’t need the cash. And he gets plenty from endorsements and modeling on his own. The punishment for cap violations is intense, not worth the risk.

Didn’t Pete Rose get in trouble for betting on himself?

Why can’t someone bet on their own team or themselves to win?

I can understand betting on your team to lose being illegal but the other direction should be just fine.

Or si the Tom Brady article just pure hyperbole? (sarc)

He didn’t “lose” 5 million. He simply didn’t earn it.

Thank you for the clarification. That is correct, he didn't earn it.

First time I ever heard of a player having these performance bonuses was Warren Moon.

Never really been about "the money" with Brady - it's been about winning Super Bowls.
He's seldom even been one of the top 10-earning quarterbacks, yet has won five SBs and three SB MVP awards.

Aaron Rodgers, on the other hand, always among the top two or three in salaries, but has won only one Super Bowl (and his girlfriend won't even let him drive on dates).

New York media trashing Boston sports. Same old, same old.

Super Bowls not involving the Cowboys don’t get remembered minutes after they are over by me. Except for the one NE went 16-0, gunning for a perfect season. The NY Giants got into the playoffs as a wild card and shut down the strutting Patriots. It’s the game of Eli Manning escaping a pile of defenders with his jersey in their hands as he lofts a pass caught by the receiver on top of his head.

The defense ended the game in Brady’s final drive by throttling him down with incomplete passes. God, I loved that game.

Fortunately for Brady, his wife makes more money than him so I don’t think they should suffer too badly. lol

Your reading the article to literally. He did not physically place a wager on his performance.
He based a portion of his potential compensation from the Patriots on certain goals. Almost all players have incentives structured into their contracts these days.

Its the carrot or the stick.

That picture sure shows the deep depression he is suffering from... Sure hope he doesn’t have E.D. as well...

The media tends to hate winners if they are Anglo Saxon males or black conservatives.

"Yep. It is estimated Brady’s 2016 income was $45 million or so. NFL salary was less than half that."

Not to worry! He, like President Trump, was smart enough to marry fabulously wealthy and beautiful women...

The media despises Brady almost as much as they despise Trump.

To a a certain extent, the media despise Brady because he is a big supporter of Trump.

Imagine if he ran for political office.
He could win ANY race in Mass by a landslide.
His only problem is he has a voice like a little girl.

Disagree 100%. If you have a lots of difficult performance bonuses, and have an amazing year where most are met by most players, then you're likely deep into the playoffs. There is not a rational GM or owner alive that would cry about paying the financial penalties for exceeding the cap, in exchange for a Ring.

But you could find yourself over the cap. Money is the first and least threatening punishment for violating the cap. The real punishment is draft picks. you find yourself losing your first 2 rounds of picks for the next 2 years you stop violating the cap. Jerry Jones learned that the hard way.

lol...that’s kind of like saying Tom only got 11 scoops of ice cream instead of 10. He’s got everything he needs.
