Prices rise as the minimum wage increases in several states
Associated Press ^ | December 30, 2018 | David A. Lieb

At Granny Shaffer’s restaurant in Joplin, Missouri, owner Mike Wiggins is reprinting the menus to reflect the 5¢, 10¢ or 20¢ added to each item.

A two-egg breakfast will cost an extra dime, at $7.39. The price of a three-piece fried chicken dinner will go up 20¢, to $8.78. The reason: Missouri’s minimum wage is rising.

Wiggins said the price hikes are necessary to help offset an estimated $10,000 to $12,000 in additional annual pay to his staff as a result of a new minimum wage law taking effect Tuesday. […]

New minimum wage requirements will take effect in 20 states and nearly two dozen cities around the start of the new year, affecting millions of workers. The state wage hikes range from an extra nickel per hour in Alaska to a $1-an-hour bump in Maine, Massachusetts and for California employers with more than 25 workers. […]

A series of studies by the University of Washington has produced evolving conclusions. In May, the researchers determined that Seattle’s initial increase to $11 an hour had an insignificant effect on employment but that the hike to $13 an hour resulted in “a large drop in employment.” They said the higher minimum wage led to a 6.9 percent decline in the hours worked for those earning under $19 an hour, resulting in a net reduction in paychecks. …

The minimum wage movement is part of that race to the bottom, not a bulwark against it. Don’t forget the real worth of the currency (controlled by the government since 1913) versus all these calls for more government “help”.

The Minimum Wage should be ZERO.

Eggs-actly. No increase in buying power. However, a decrease in the value of your savings account.

It will also mean the unemployment line for a lot of marginal workers, and fewer learning opportunities.

This, Prevailing Wage Laws, Minority Business Award requirements and Government Unions continue to erode our Capitalistic System.

Of course, with a National Debt of over $21,000,000,000,000 (and rising) and the cost to service that Debt overtaking our entire Defense Budget, the Nation is already destined to implode.

Just another brick in the wall.

“Open your government business and pay employees $50!”

Please don’t. I have a choice whether I want to go to McDonald’s and pay a higher price to support a wage hike. For government, I have no choice.

So if restaurant prices go up because the employees get minimum wage, I guess I can skip tipping at those establishments. Win for me.

At Granny Shafffer’s in Joplin, waitress Shawna Green will see her base pay go up. But she has mixed emotions about it.

“We’ll have regulars, and they will notice, and they will bring it to our attention, like it’s our fault and our doings” that menu prices are increasing, she said. “They’ll back off on something, and it’s usually their tips, or they don’t come as often.”
Already happening. Surprised AP included that in their article, but there it is, way down in the tenth and eleventh paragraphs.

2 eggs, hashbrowns, two small (half size from the looks of the picture) pieces of bacon/sausage/ham and toast. Eggs are a dime a piece. Potatoes are <5 cents. Bread here is 4 cents/slice. A slice of ham shank at 89 cents/lb is 17 cents. Breakfast sausage links are 19 cents each (his menu doesn’t say how many sausages on a plate so going with one since he serves half slices of bacon). Bacon is $3.49 12 oz/pkg with about 13 slices so 27 cents/each. Those are grocery store prices from my receipts so are likely higher than what he pays.

Homecooked with would be in the neighborhood of 50 cents. That’s a savings of $6.89 not counting the savings on his $2.10 coffee, tax, tip and gas used driving there.

20 cents here and 20 cents there adds up quickly. Just looked at my grocery receipts and 12 oz. pkg of bacon has gone from $1.99 to nearly double at $3.49 since last year. The 70% ground beef also doubled and is now more expensive than boneless pork loin.

but there is no refund of SS contributions

Correct. Socialist Stupidity taxes are not refunded, and they are spitting money out of that system like water to pay for all these illegal aliens and their progeny.

The taxpayer once again takes it in the shorts, while the democRATS buy votes with you money.

Then Shawna should go work at a regular job. She won’t because tips are “free” money. If each breakfast customer gave her a $2 tip, at 10 customers every half hour, she’d make $20/hr. Not too shabby and the taxman need not know.

Yes - but at $15/hour the Social Security & Medicare tax receipts go up (simply passing from the EMPLOYER - since the employee never had those higher wages before anyway - to government coffers). The low-wage workers may still get free sh!t and full income tax refunds, but those transfers to SS and Medicare are gone forever. They rise temporarily, then fall again as the businesses close/move on to greener pastures - or simply automate more functions (ATMs and kiosks don’t pay ANY taxes).

I’ll repeat myself. If we had a closed labor market so that our labor didn’t have to compete with invader labor, legal and illegal, wages would go up in a normal way....supply and demand. Another factor that would support living wages would be if manufacturers couldn’t ship jobs overseas when the product could be produced in the US. Supply and demand curves don’t work without a defined universal set.

One case is anecdotal. It also might be that EVerify was only half-heartedly used. Overall, EVerify would be the best way to stop bosses from playing dumb about hiring invader labor.

Lang (Yarrabee Farms) lied at first and falsely claimed to have used E-verify. What they did was make sure the SSN was real, but didn’t verify that the presenter of the SSN was the actual person whose account it was.
