Alice Cooper: 'I want my shows to take you as far away as possible from politics'
Guardian UK ^ | Saturday, December 29, 2018 | Interviewed by James McMahon

I don’t like to mix politics and rock’n’roll. I don’t look at Bono, Sting and Bruce Springsteen as political. I look at them as being humanitarian. I’ll contribute to anything humanitarian. Helping people who can’t help themselves. But when musicians are telling people who to vote for, I think that’s an abuse of power. You’re telling your fans not to think for themselves, just to think like you. Rock’n’roll is about freedom – and that’s not freedom. I want my shows to take you as far away as possible from politics. It’s supposed to be an escape from the world we’re living in. And you know the next president is going to be worse than Trump, right?

Thanks all! And Happy New Year. Had no idea 2018 on FR would go out with such a kaboom. Goes to show that the popularity of a topic is impossible to guess in advance, that's why I don't try.

Forgot about Bono’s anti-Trump rants in Berlin, while in his “devil clown” guise? Quite political.

Bono is a “humanitarian?”

He’s as political as Springsteen just liked more for some reason. Maybe his “humanitarian” label gives him more cred.

Exactly.

And I love BonJovi’s music but HATE his politics. Shut up and sing, imo.

Bono always has rants about our Republican Presidents but never about our Democrat Presidents.Hmmm.

Something tells me he’s biased just like most of entertainment/tv/movies/news, etc. Bono is mainstream and old and irrelevant. Nobody under 40 listens to his music like those of his era. Bono and U2 are what my husband still listens to. Same with all the music from our era. I’m a huge Bon Jovi fan for their music and never gave a crap about them otherwise. But they’re has beens to kids today.

That was very cool, thank you....if took a few flashes of Slash before I realized it was him

My favorite part was when the receptionist spit out her gum. That was rad.

I don't know if you heard of Bobby Steele, who played guitar for the Misfits in their salad days (1978-1980) and who continues to play/release punk records with his band, The Undead. Bobby has great respect for Alice. Here is one of their videos for "Be My Ghoul." and a live gig opening with the Misfits' "Halloween." Old school punk..I hope it works for you.

I *love* the Misfits.

Himself is an Elvis fan and I was playing “The Misfits - Project 1950” on my stereo.

When “Only Make Believe” came on, he thought it was Elvis.

Love THE UNDEAD!

Always looking for new good music as I’m getting a bit sick of my massive collection of oldies but goodies.

:D

Kinda puts me to mind of Pete Steele’s side project band, Carnivore.

This thread and Salamander's encouragement got me to re-live my youth and play Alice Cooper Goes to Hell in it's entirety while I was on the road.

I was never a YUGE Alice fan and ACGTH is my only full album of his. But I loved that growing up.

I am very familiar with the backstory, Alice's drinking problems, that the tour was canceled etc. I know it's not a particularly well-regarded album in his catalogue...perhaps considered his Presence or Who by Numbers by the Rock intelligencia. (For the record, I love both of those albums.)

So a week or so ago I play the album front to back for the first time since the Carter Administration. The album that I loved as a young DoodleBob took on a new dimension for the older DB. I'm sure I am reading way too much into it, but it was as if Alice was conveying to his audience that yes...I've got regrets, we all have regrets, and we all struggle between what we WANT to do and what we know is RIGHT. But don't kid yourself...you CAN turn it around, and wake up from this nightmare, and begin the process of advancing toward what is good.

Even the "weakest" song on the album, Wake Me Gently, is incredibly powerful from a lyrical/redemptive perspective. "...cause where I'm at is where, I want to leave...". That song should be played for anyone undergoing a crisis of faith, of confidence, who has hit bottom and think they can't crawl out of the hole.

I'm incredibly blessed to not be in a hole, but WOW did that album stand the test of time. The production is awesome (well, it IS Bob Ezrin after all), the tunes cover the gamut of hard rock, disco, vaudeville, ballads, and you can air drum through the outtro to Wish You Were Here and forget what Phil Collins did on In the Air Tonight.

I suspect many others reading this will listen to ACGTH and say "I don't get it." And maybe that's just the same, and maybe I'm just odd. But I wanted to thank you both, for being the genesis of one of the best feedback moments from my youth. God Bless you.

The Undead came back to life (no pun intended) around 2014-2015 as Bobby was in semi-retirement. Since then they’ve started gigging (chiefly in the NJ/NYC area though they’re hiting California soon) and released a full album (”The Morgue, The Merrier”) and an EP (”Having an Undead Summer”). I highly recommend them.
