Trump EPA orders rollback of Obama mercury regulations
Associated Press ^ | December 29, 2018 | Ellen Knickmeyer

The Trump administration has targeted an Obama-era regulation credited with helping dramatically reduce toxic mercury pollution from coal-fired power plants, saying the benefits to human health and the environment may not be worth the cost of the regulation.

The 2011 Obama administration rule, called the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, led to what electric utilities say was an $18 billion clean-up of mercury and other toxins from the smokestacks of coal-fired power plants.

Overall, environmental groups say, federal and state efforts have cut mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants by 85 percent in roughly the last decade.

Mercury causes brain damage, learning disabilities and other birth defects in children, among other harm. Coal power plants in this country are the largest single manmade source of mercury pollutants, which enters the food chain through fish and other items that people consume.

The proposal Friday from the Environmental Protection Agency challenges the basis for the Obama regulation. It calculates that the crackdown on mercury and other toxins from coal plants produced only a few million dollars a year in measurable health benefits and was not “appropriate and necessary” — a legal benchmark under the country’s landmark Clean Air Act. …

Regardless of what Obama did or did not do, we don’t need Mercury in the environment.

Yes, God sure made a mistake in placing Mercury in our Earth’s environment. ;-)

When are they going to put an end to the radon scam. Helping industry is great but helping average consumers directly would be even greater. Consumer spending is the bulk of the economy. Any cessation of bs that takes money out of their pocket and into a faux industry is a good thing.

I never realized that a Decade is only seven years long.

UNLESS the Electric Utilities were cleaning up Mercury emissions for three years before Obama wanted to take credit for their actions.

LEDs are the answer. Make sure you get 3000K color temp or lower, and 85 Color Rendering Index or higher. Preferable 90 or better.

Thiomersal is not elemental mercury, although it is toxic in and of itself at high doses. The main metabolite is ethyl mercury, CH3CH2Hg+.

Children’s vaccines don’t have thiomersal in them these days; flu shots still do. Thiomersal is used due to its effectiveness at killing bacterial and fungal contaminants.

Dihydrogen monoxide is thoroughly dangerous stuff, as documented here:

More people die from Dihidrogen monoxide than some of the named "most dangerous chemicals" on the planet, like asbestos, cholesteral, second hand smoke, dioxin, and coffee!!!

“Mercury IS toxic. Read the MSDS on ethylmercury.”

Now, now.

Mercury is approved for amalgam dental fillings, and is used in some vaccines, which many here idolize, and your government swears are safe.

Surely, if mercury is good enough for babies, it is safe.

Lead regulations need to be rolled back, too. More junk and politicized ‘science’.

Mercury causes brain damage

I suppose that this could explain the high incidence of liberalism.

Yes. I was just about to drizzle a mercury-fluoride dressing on my salad. Totally safe, and will help me fight cavities.

In a just world, leaded gasoline would still be available. Trump should bring it back. Cars would be cars again. Lead also made paint last longer, with no harmful effects that have ever been proven.

Also, how many lives have been lost in fires because of the whackadoodle liberal jihad against asbestos?

Most of Obama’s EPA regulations weren’t put into place until his last year in office as an anchor for Trump’s economic plans to reduce regulations.

Obama used the rule to SHUT DOWN coal plants, it had no basis in health.

But then that’s who Democrats are.
