The former controller of Continental BMW in Connecticut used the stolen funds for travel, plastic surgery, and a $50,000 Ford Mustang.
Vanessa Vence-Small, the former controller of Continental BMW in Darien Connecticut, has been accused of embezzling $1.1 million from the successful, family-owned car dealership. Vence-Small is now facing 30 months in prison courtesy of the U.S. District Court in New Haven, Connecticut after pleading guilty of wire fraud, Automotive News reports.
In order to supplement her $150,000 yearly income, the former controller cooked the books to the tune of over a million bucks over the course of 2.5 years. Allegedly she dropped over $50,000 on a new Ford Mustang, which was later forfeited and valued at just $28,840, and spent the rest of her stolen money on things like lavish travels around the globe, cosmetic surgery, and some landscaping and remodeling for her house.

When I worked for the power company some very attractive and totally dishonest female working in accounts payable would cut two checks for the same amount for a couple of the regular suppliers except the name on the duplicate check would just be slightly different from the real thing. She had set up business accounts at different banks for the slightly altered named businesses. I always wondered (until it came out) how she could afford a much nicer car than I had and all of her fancy clothes on a lot lower salary than I made. She was caught in an audit and had to make restitution, but never reached criminal court because the company did not want the embarrassment of looking like poor financial stewards

Yep, a serial embezzler. Bet that job isn't listed on her LinkedIn profile.
Probably thought that would look suspicious or that they were paying her too much.
A $50K Mustang? And she was working at a BMW dealership. That's a bridge too far.
I live on $19,800 annually from SS and I do just fine.
But I have no debt, own several properties free and clear, have cash in the bank and don't waste what I spend.
What this lady did is called GREED.
One of my customers was nursing home medical supply company. I did all of their printing. Forms, invoices, labels, etc. It was a successful company that the owner had built up himself from scratch to 5 employees over 20 years.
He had hired a former Wall Street banker to run the financial end of his company and take it to the next level.
The company continued to grow for two years and then one day, nothing.
I hadn't gotten any orders for a while or calls so I went to visit him. I was shocked at what I discovered.
The new financial officer had embezzled several million from the company, putting it into bankruptcy. He took off on the run and hadn't been found as of yet.
The owner was devastated. The office was in shambles. All five employees were out of jobs. He had lost over a hundred pounds, his wife had divorced him and everything he worked for over 20+ years was gone. He was close to being suicidal.
I read later that they caught the guy in Mexico but by then it was too late for the owner and his company.
All because of the greed of one man.
I believe in all seriousness that you need an ethical bypass to work on Wall Street. It is both convenient, and I believe correct, to just discriminate against putting anyone with that experience anywhere near other people’s money.

Given all the problems we have in Congress and their very low, low rating among the public, all politicians should have one of your ethical bypasses to be elected.

Agree, she has more plastic than most American cars.

Yep, I never ran a significant business, but if I did, I vowed to sign every check that goes out. I would NEVER entrust anyone other than close family (if that) to sign for me.
In that business, I’d be checking invoices randomly. If I saw one for 50 oil filters, I’d ask to see them or see where they were used, and I’d check the price charged against Amazon or Part.com to make sure nothing funny is going on. And you just keep doing it and doing it, it’s simply part of the business.
It’s obviously much better to prevent the problems, rather than have to try to deal with them afterwards..
Not to be too insulting, but I suspect that would be more than punishment enough! If not, then 3 more months at Laz’s place. ;)
