Anyone Else Alone on Christmas Eve?
From Skooz's Comfy Home | 12/24/2018 | Skooz

Well, this seems to have become an annual event. Alone on Christmas Eve, reaching out to my fellow FReepers.

Myself, I have my daughter's hermit crab for company. And some great classical Christmas music. And, a little later, George Bailey and friends via BluRay.

Anyone else spending this evening solo?

Wife and her sister are here tonight, so not alone. I cooked some scallops, shrimp, a red snapper fish for them and a steak for me (and the dog). Sister doesn’t speak a lick of English, but it is all good. Everyone is happy. Better than the years I spent alone after the divorce (number one wife), but they weren’t terrible, either. Dogs help. Never alone with a dog.

My wife and I has a wonderful turkey dinner(I'm the chef) and we watched “Scrooge’’, the classic 1951 version with Alistair Sim, THE best version ever. Hey folks, if you would give a greeting to "Bunny Slippers'' if you see her here. She could use it. Thanks.

I have been alone all but 5 years in the past 60.

Cousin & her husband visited about 10 years ago.

We had a good time, as I had just moved my 6 horses here & built a new ranch set up.

We were up on the 2nd morning & I asked them what they wanted for breakfast. Her husband asked- what might be available? I said ROOT BEER FLOATS!!! We laughed & laughed.

We had had root beer floats with dinner the night before & they both commented on how much they liked them, but hadn’t had any in YEARS!!!

Grilled cheese sandwiches—root beer floats—macaroni & cheese-—loaded baked potatoes. We forget what makes us happy.

I told him—when you live alone- you can eat what you want—when you want—as much as you want without any comments from the peanut gallery.

I talk to that cousin almost every month & sometimes I ask her-—Have you 2 had any root beer floats lately? Makes her laugh hard. It is like a code word between the 3 of us.

SOOOO—Merry Christmas Root Beer floats to one & all.

It’s both. He is muscular, has nice teeth and a nice smile, so that’s probably drawing most of the attention.

I’m sorry, I did not mean to imply I was alone as in divorced. My wife and daughter like to have a couple of days girl time now and then. I’m cool with that. We’ll all be together tomorrow.

It’s my brother I feel for. It’s only been a few weeks since his wife died. It’s very tough.

Just the wife and I here this year....kinda quiet.
Usually, we’re at family, but not this year.

That is an excellent version, but my all-time favorite is (believe it or not) A Muppet Christmas Carol.

Michael Caine is perfection as Scrooge. He took what could have been a silly, throw-away role and made it superb.

I don't celebrate Christmas, so I am solo. I just finished painting my spare room, the paint is dry so I'm getting ready to move the furniture out so I can clean and prepare to sand the floor. Yes, I'm doing a total makeover and have never redone oak floors before. When I'm finished, it will be my craft room, and plant room. So, the stereo is blaring out some old fashioned classic rock. Its me, the two dogs and two guinea pigs, my little family. I called my dad to wish him a happy birthday. All in all, its been a nice evening, and I'm excited about putting the new to me dressers in my bedroom from what was the storage room, and beginning the final reconstruction of that horrible old room that's noow beginning to look brand new and beautiful room. After getting the furniture moved around, I may bteak dow and pull a homemade bottle of wine from storage and enjoy the fruit of the vine. 😁

I had to go to see the (liberal) inlaws today. I wish I could have been home with my dog.

Have a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year

Been there. Done that.

Will be remembering you in my prayers tonight. Hoping that you are looking forward to brighter days with friends and family. Praying that God will strengthen and uplift your heart. May I offer some scripture that was given to me more than 30 years ago during some of my darkest days - Psalm 27. I have read it many many times over the years.

Finally here’s a sermon that you may find encouraging. Just click “Watch” at the link: http://carmelbaptist.org/media/sermon-archive/james-how-to-face-your-future/

I love to hear this guy preach!

Preacher: Alex Kennedy

Series: James: How to Live the Gospel

Summary:

James: How to Face Your Future James: How to Live the Gospel Pastor Alex Kennedy, Senior Pastor December 2, 2018

Detail:

James: How to Face Your Future

James 4:13-17 continues to show us practically how to live as James addresses how we should look to the future. He begins in verse 13 with “Come now”, which means, “listen up!”. As he shares an example of how so many live, there is a glaring omission of God. We often make plans and then ask God to bless those plans. Instead, we should seek God first and have Him guide us!

1. Face your tomorrows by planning without assumptions.
It takes humility to admit that we don’t fully know what is going to happen. In verse 14a, we see a qualitative statement by James reminding the people who they are (Prov 27:1; Luke 12). He is reminding us that whatever our last day is, it is a good day because we will step into the presence of God. He goes on in verse 14b to make a quantitative statement in saying, “What is your life?” He compares life to a mist. We are here for a short time and then vanish.

2. Face your tomorrows by LIVING today.
If you had 1 week left on earth, who would you call, who would your drive to see, and what would you give away? Verse 15 says we ought to say, “If the Lord wills”. We must remember that the soul He gave us is His. We should live each day for Him. Verse 16 warns us that “boasting in your arrogance” is evil. At the beginning of creation, pride was what got us into trouble, and it still wrecks lives today. Remember, spiritually speaking, you can trust Him.

3. Face your tomorrows with open hands.
Verse 17 says, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” This speaks to the sin of omission, which is failing to do something that you should have done. Friendship to the world instead of friendship to God leads to a lack of listening to Him.

4. Face your tomorrows by living with an obedient heart today.
