My paternal grandfather was an ambulance driver in France as well. He had polio and was unfit for the military. He went over to France on his own to volunteer.

The family history on my grandfather said he was a “Red Cross” ambulance driver. Was the Red Cross a separate entity from the Army or was that just a designation of that particular corps?

I’m not sure, my grandfather received a citation from the French government for his service.

I saw it last night. It was excellent. And, by the way, you should stick around for the “making of” short that follows the credits of the main show.

I saw this yesterday and I loved it. When it came to life in colour…….words fail me.

BTT reminder that it’s only showing at 1PM ET tomorrow. At least I can see it at a choice of a few theaters locally.

Most Fathom events here are only showing at only one theater in the area.

Was sold out everywhere in the area. I didn’t get tickets. WB announced that there will be showings on Jan 11 only in NYC, LA and DC with a wider release to follow.

“If nothing else, our entry put an end to it.”

Our entry extended the war by two years and led to the second World War. What our presence did change on the other hand, was that the Triple Entente (Allied Powers) became the nominal victors in the war.

Agreed. If we had stayed out it’s likely Germany would have won. That would not have been a bad thing.

While the British government denied it for decades, we now know that the Lusitania was, in fact, carrying munitions (including 4 million rounds of .303). The German government also took out ads in American newspapers to warn potential passengers about it. These ads ran right next to Cunard’s ads for the Lusitania. We also know that through his private letters that
Churchill hoped to embroil neutral powers into the war (and, in particular the United States) through allowing catastrophes like the one that happened to the Lusitania. It’s not exactly a sound casus belli in retrospect, I’d go so far as to say that it’s an important reminder that the “deep state” was with us, even back then.

I saw a 2D presentation of this today. Usually, I can’t abide 3D films becuase I get motion sick, but in this case it was a big mistake. It seems they converted the footage to 3D and then back into 2D, instead of taking the more logical approach and making a decent 2d cut of the film then converting to 3D. What 2D viewers ended up with was a mess of blurry, stretched and distorted imagery (especially faces), and was so full of visual artifacts that it made highly compressed first generation cell phone video look attractive by comparison. Some scenes even had an odd “boiling” look to them where the background squiggled for no apparent reason. Oddly, in this version of the film the best looking footage was the “unrestored” black and white footage at the beginning and the end. If you get a chance to see it in a theater, be sure to see it in 3D. 2D was an afterthought.

I should add that the sound effects and lip-reading were pretty impressive most of the time, however.
