FULL TITLE: Parachutes do NOT save the lives of people who jump from aeroplanes, claim sarcastic scientists in a study designed to reveal how flawed 'research' can be
'This largely resulted from our ability to only recruit participants jumping from stationary aircraft on the ground,' the scientists wrote.
The researchers revealed the parachute did not deploy for all 12 of the volunteers because of the 'short duration and altitude of falls'.
They sarcastically described their study as groundbreaking'.
And they added it 'should give momentary pause to experts who advocate for routine use of parachutes for jumps from aircraft in recreational or military settings'.
They wrote in the BMJ that, should the results be reproduced in future trials, it could save the global economy billions of dollars spent annually on parachutes to 'prevent injuries related to gravitational challenge'.
When pointing out flaws in the research, the scientists accepted there 'could have been a lower risk of death or major trauma because they jumped from an average altitude of 0.6m on aircraft moving at an average of 0 km/h.
But they wrote: 'It will be up to the reader to determine the relevance of these findings in the real world.'
They later added the results 'might not be generalisable to the use of parachutes in aircraft traveling at a higher altitude or velocity'.
The researchers also wrote: 'The PARACHUTE trial satirically highlights some of the limitations of randomized controlled trials.
'Nevertheless, we believe that such trials remain the gold standard for the evaluation of most new treatments.

On a side note, if anyone has not yet tried venues such as iFly, I highly recommend it. All the fun of falling to ones death, but in a controlled environment and under supervision.
Parachutes do NOT save the lives of people who jump from aeroplanes
everybody dies...
eventually
Only two things fall out of the sky... Bird shit and fools.
The results conflict with my own study. I asked 100 people who jumped from airplanes whether their chute deployed or not. 100% of them said it did. Science.
“Jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft is an unnatural act”.

Definitely belongs in the “Journal of Irreproducible Results” EXCEPT that you can repeat this ‘study’ every time for the same results! Still it does match the other criteria of being a backhand to much of the ‘STUDIES’ Academia Idiocy!
Agreed...at times it is difficult to discern the two.
‘short duration and altitude of falls’. The study is right. I wore a parachute and jumped from my dining room table. It didn’t even deploy in time to save my life, so what good are they. Next time you’re in a plane that has become a flying flaming bowling ball, just stay with it and don’t bother with the ‘chute.
I’ll look into that.
Thank you.
Did it have a pilot chute?
Groundbreaking. I get it.
I grant you a Grant. You will go far.
I first jumped after eight hours of intensive ground training: 8A to 5P, with a lunch break.
During those eight hours:
A male jumper got tangled in the empennage after deployment, leaving him dangling behind the jump plane.
A female jumper got tangled in her chute lines after panicking, so her chute dud not open.
A male instructor lost half his strapping upon deployment, sending him spinning out of control.
The head instructor never lost his cool. He safely talked them down to the ground via radio.
Watching and hearing him pleasantly but assertively talking the terrified woman out of her panic as we students witnessed her hurtling to her apparently imminent death was amazing.
I jumped at sunset, not a bit apprehensive. I was well prepared. The sunset was also amazing.
P.S. All of the above is to emphasize why they make you wear a backup chute.
I’m not sure what a pilot chute is; it did, however, come with a drogue chute in case I got up to about 200 mph in running off the table.
The pilot chute is attached to the top of the main chute,it’s a miniature chute attached to a heavy spring, you compress it and place it on top of the packed chute as you close the flaps over it,when the rip cord is pulled the pilot chute flys out of the pack pulling the chute out.
Because there is no such thing as a perfectly good airplane.
It is just a bunch of parts flying along together until they decide not to do so for whatever reason.
Thanks. Being a former pilot, the closest I ever got to a chute, or an understanding of its mechanics, was jumping off a table. Literally. But without a chute. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you as well,I served in the Navy 68-72 in two Fighter Squadrons out of Miramar in San Diego, was a Parachute Rigger, also Plane Captain on McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom
