Chivalry might be dead, but many women still welcome it when a man holds a door or picks up the check. While more than 77% of people in one survey thought a man should pay for a first date, women may see the gesture as a patronizing deal-breaker, especially as society wrestles more than ever with the power dynamic between the sexes.

But now there’s evidence that women — even committed feminists — interpret paying for dinner and holding doors as signs that a man is husband material. Interestingly, these women are fully aware that a man who engages in this “benevolent sexism” could also be the type of guy who undermines women and tries to control them, a recent study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found.

An elderly male friend....Should he open the door for young lady (moi)?? Or should I open it for him.

We always laughed when we got to a door....it was a first one to the door does the honors...

Well as a gal here I've never had to even offer to pay for a meal....I wouldn't. Nor refused a door being opened....though I've had a few close in my face I thought would be held...lol.

These jesters are what brings out the some of the best qualities in men. They are generous, and they are courteous if given the opportunity to do so.....too many women forget the a man gets 'pleasure' out of thee things..it's not just about YOU!

I experienced Gallantry waaaaay beyond the norm last week.

My mechanic (the repair shop owner) personally fixed my car and....No Charge!!

I was stunned. I had worried all weekend if I had enough to pay him.

Made my day.

I have been married forever. Haven’t picked up the check in years.

Nor I, though my check goes into the joint account.

I’ve been fortunate also....I couldn’t reach the top shelf at the grocery store and this chap stepped right up to the plate to help......he was so pleased to be able to help too. These things always bring a Man pleasure when they are appreciated.

I love it!

Having a handicapped husband, I always go first to open and hold the door. If anyone is behind him, I continue to gladly hold it open. I am always impressed by the manners of the men who will insist on holding the door for me, instead.

In my experience, most women would have been offended if I had not picked up the check.

I think we found ourselves a winner.

Umm, Hello, men picking up the check shows that they have resources and they’re willing to expend them loving, protecting, and providing for their women. In spite of the best efforts of the radical feminists, some women still find this quite attractive.

If a guy pays for the check then that means the woman has to put out right? : )

Of course, a bigger, stronger person should do the heavy jobs. And the tougher of the two should protect the tenderer! I agree with you. It’s nature.

A lot of women seem to get irritated when I pick up chicks on dinner dates.

Wait, I think I misread the title. Yes, he said checks, not chicks. Never mind.

I might be inclined to pick up the check for the right Czech chick.
