Thomas McElhany, 26, has been missing since around 5 a.m. Friday when the crew of the Carnival Victory alerted the Coast Guard that a passenger had gone overboard about 35 miles south of Islamorada.
The Victory briefly joined the search Friday, but eventually returned to the Port Miami.
The Coast Guard said crews including those on airplanes, helicopters and cutters searched for 32 hours and covered 2,086 square miles.

Horrible.
Is it wrong to assume he was probably pushed or jumped?
Might have been “death by selfie”
My brother was in the Navy. He told me once that he had participated in more than one search for a “man overboard.”
He said that no search he ever participated in or heard of had been successful.
He also indicated that some people might have found pushing someone overboard to be a convenient way to get rid of someone.
I used to sail those waters every year and Id see the Carnival ships at night lit up like the party boats that they try to be. It would be so easy to get someone you want to collect insurance on drunk enough that no one would be able to prove anything
But I bet that crosses everyones mind that hears of another one.
Youd just have to be careful of the surveillance cameras. On my boat Id be careful who I took out to sea for long cruises
Sounds like the company managed to transfer the costs to taxpayers.
It’s hard to fall over the railing accidentally. Now, being Thrown or climbing over the railing is another story.
Cruise ships avoid getting caught up with American regulations and law enforcement and register their ships in foreign countries, and hope incidents occur in International waters.
This ship Carnival Victory is registered in Panama, and has had several past overboard deaths, which would be to me normal, when you see the number of people they carry on a yearly basis. - Tom
People who have been on ships to the Caribbean the past few weeks have experienced some bad weather. It could’ve been caused by rough seas, wind, or a wet deck. People often lose awareness of the potential dangers of being at sea.
I cruise alone and don't meet with people in private. I let the housekeeper know that I never invite anyone into my room. People aren't aware that cruisers aren't vetted except for sufficient ID. The other thing is that there are some people who get along perfectly in normal situations, but can't stand the cruise routine together.
We have produced a generation of idiots with no situational awareness ability what so ever.
I hate to make assumptions but....
I heard a quote last night that it was not accidental, but I took that to mean suicide rather than an altercation.
You couldnt catch me dead on a cruise shipm
I went on a Carnival cruise with an old friend and her teenage daughter. Big mistake. The daughter and a friend were out all night on the ship and whenever we called security they knew exactly where the girls were. I think there are many cameras.
I never understood why cruise ships don’t have nets or sensors that would deploy the nets like air bags.
Unless they go from the stern aren’t persons going into the water from a cruise ship going into the prop whether they want to or not?
