Woman punches bear, gets help from dog to survive attack

A woman survived a mauling by a bear by repeatedly punching the animal and crawling into a bush as her Chihuahua-mix distracted the attacker.

Melinda LeBarron has broken bones, cuts and bruises and multiple bites after the attack outside her home in rural Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening, her son said. She remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday.

Her dog — fittingly named Bear — was also bitten several times and has a broken sternum and separated ribs.

"I'll just put it this way — she's very, very lucky to be alive," said her son, Trent LeBarron, who described her as a tough person. "She was punching the bear and everything. Her right hand's all swollen up from punching the bear."

Cute dog indeed. And small too. Which reminds me of the adage, “ it’s not the size of the dog in fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog that matters.”

I just want to make sure that the younger people here know that this crap didn’t happen back when I was young.

This is the fault of the slobbering moron greentard coprophages who have brought predators back into our residential areas.

Anybody think that was a good idea? Bringing predators into our residential areas so we can’t go out into our yards without being mauled by a bear or a puma?

Blind attack from behind. Saved by a chihuahua mix.

God bless that baby pup. Some seriously painful time ahead of it. Hope it goes on to have the best life ever.

Hunt more bears.

You may be confusing Bear Bryant with Woody Hayes

“Hunt more bears.”

Funny, I was just daydreaming about how great it would be to have a bear robe.

We’re up to our asses in “coyotes” [eastern wolves] and livestock slaughtering black bears.

They still swear we have no mountain lions, just like they did with the other predators so I’m sure they’re slinking around, too.

I have to let my dogs out in their fenced yard, never letting them out of my sight, with a Beretta in my hand.

40 years ago, my dogs just ran around loose and slept in the yard, perfectly safe, even if I wasn’t home.

Bastards.

Friend of mine was grieving over the “baby bear” splattered on I70.

I passed it too, at night, but thought it was somebody’s big black dog.

She’s still upset and I’m doing a happy dance.

One less bear is a blessing.

They’re actually blaming the dog, now:

“Wildlife officials told WNEP-TV they are trying to track the bear. Game Commission spokesman Travis Lau said his agency believes it is a sow with cubs and the attack occurred after the dog ran toward the bears.”

Woman and dog belonged there, bear did not.

They are planning on re-introducing Grizzly Bears to Washington state. There’s a GOOD reason why there aren’t any here now.

Maybe they are thinking the bears will thin out the wolves they reintroduced previously?

I discovered too late in life how much I would love to take down a grizzly. So I am living vicariously through some friends who are trying...you know Alberta has been discussing the idea of coming to the US...and wow that would give Americans a place to hunt grizzly without the sierra club pukes who are currently stalling a designated hunt at Yellowstone.

We've had black bears in our bird feeders often...they hunt them here so I think it must help.

Only bears I like are those ones in Asia - sun and moon bears.
