If it turns out to be a coffin, I'm outta there.

Already-reconstructed rooms in the castle's depths include a torture chamber...

They know how to pack the tourists in. Nobody's going there to see a sewing room. There is some historical debate as to at what point a redoubt turns into a fortress, a fortress into a castle; I gently suggest that it has to have a torture chamber to be a proper castle.

Technically, a fortress is a fort/castle with outer works, aka "breastworks."

That originated as a pun in English and doesn't work in other languages, but it captures the idea. It's a matter of scale, and scale is closely linked to both provisioning and defense in depth. A "fortress" is designed to withstand a prolonged siege.
