Detroit TV meteorologist Jessica Starr commits suicide after sharing 'struggles' caused by Lasik eye surgery. ( Full title).

A Detroit meteorologist whose final social media posts highlighted her lingering struggles after getting Lasik eye surgery committed suicide Wednesday. She was 35.

...

She underwent Lasik SMILE eye surgery in October and was forced to take time off of work, a struggle she addressed in a Facebook video in early November.

I’m still healing… (but) I’m ready to get back to my life,” she said, noting that doctors told her it would take about three months before she felt 100% again.

...

Her final tweet came one day later, when she explained that the surgery was still affecting her day-to-day life.

Update: yesterday was a struggle for me. I really wanted to come back but I need more time to recover.

...

Her death echoes that of 54-year-old Paul Fitzpatrick, who committed suicide in October due to the intense pain he experienced as a result of a “badly performed” laser eye surgery 20 years ago.

Results of Lasik surgery are NOT 100% predictable.
People need to be fully aware of that before making their decision. It’s a great blessing to many, but things can and do go wrong.

For me, eyesight is not trivial. I had cataract operations on both eyes several years ago and two days after the operations I was good to go with 20/20 uncorrected vision for the first time in my life. Had the operations been botched, blind or not, I would have killed the doctor.

Are you saying you would have killed yourself if you believed it would be a few weeks or months before you again experienced clear vision?

No. I would have killed the doctor who botched the operations if the prognosis was for long term blindness or severely impaired vision.

More than likely. I’ve had both Cataract and Lasix, it only takes about a month for healing and vision to return, BUT you have to get USE to your new vision. The BAD thing about both surgeries is DRY EYE SYNDROME. Not much they can do about it. Astigmatism may occur and you still end up in glasses. If you chose 1 of those cheap outfits your NUTS. Get a REAL Cornea doc and be sure to do back ground checks. When you go for a Refraction, be sure to tell the Optometrist where your new vision was set. Mine is not the typical because of other health issues involving joints. Avoid the Box Stores for glasses.

If you develop Dry Eye buy 2 lbs of rice, dump in clean white men’s sock tie it up. You can go from 60 sec to 120 sec in microwave. Wet a folded over wash cloth and place on your eyes then add the rice bag. It will help with the Dry Eye. There are Oil Glands in the Eye Lids that clog up. This will help to unclog them. If you need Lubricant eye drops SOOTHE SINGLES are the BEST HAS THE MOST LUBRICANT. Won’t leave your vision blurry. Repeat as often in the day as you need. DO NOT GET THE ONES WITH PRESERVATIVES! I’ve bought every brand on the market and the Soothe Singles are the very best.

Odd to read about eyes and rice today. Just yesterday a lady in our quilting group said she had to stop eating rice because her eyes got try and blurred her vision. I just assumed that rice absorbs liquids generally and that’s what was going on.

So I guess rice = bad and rice = good. Interesting.

I had RK done about 1990. 20/15 left and 20/20 right until early 40’s, about 10 years. Loved it.

Nearsightedness crept in until I needed glasses full time about 7 years ago.
All in all, well worth it.

Wish I could get them fixed again.

Yikes!!! It costs $2,000 to $3,000... per eye?!?!?! Chalk that up as yet another reason why I'll stick with my good old glasses.

I hope I never am at a point where I am in so much pain that ending it all is the answer.

First time I ever had glasses I was 50 years old and went right to bi-focals.

My prescription changed every year and paying 300+ for new glasses got to be a pain.

I paid 1895 per eye for lasik back in 12/2007. Came with a "lifetime" warranty.

I did it because of golf. The ball was blurry.
Best thing I did. I could see thru walls.
Doctor told me I'd probably have to still use reading glasses as they couldn't fix age. 😊

I eventually did and now I am at a point where I need glasses again.

Even though I have met the conditions of my "lifetime" warranty, not sure I want to have the surgery at my age today.

but it's still about golf so who knows....

Luckily my eyes have been quite stable for years. The glasses I got about 20 years ago still give me great vision.Add to that the fact that I look damn handsome in glasses! :-)

She got tired of waiting for her life to get back to normal so she killed herself? Something is not right there. I guess entitlement mentality can leave you with a lot of issues when life doesn’t end up perfect like you think you deserve.

Plus the delusion that death provides relief, and an end to all troubles, when in reality dying by self-murder (presuming rationality) or otherwise apart from saving obedient faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ means that your real interminable troubles have just begun.

Of course, if we really believed and more fully realized that as Christians and cared about souls then we would try to do better at stopping them from their tragic delusion.

I cannot find "Soothe Singles." You mean Soothe No Preservative Lubricant?

You sneer so well. You must have a lot of practice.

Metmom is no stranger to prolonged, ongoing personal suffering from a perplexing health issue. She can give details if you ask.

Yes that’s the 1. https://www.amazon.com/Soothe-Preservative-Lubricant-Bausch-Lomb/dp/B004JCKN48/ref=sr_1_9_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1544887141&sr=8-9&keywords=soothe+xp+eye+drops+single+use

I’d suggest the baby shampoo wash, Rice Bag, then use Ring Finger to message the lids very gently, followed by the Lubricant drops.

I had to have all 4 of my drain ducts cauterized closed. Eliminate drying agents you take, a cool humidifier helps some.

They also have the ones with the Omega 3 Flax seed oil that box is yellow. I say away from that as Flax Seed makes me ill. Not sure how that is on the Blur issue.

Store in Fridge if you want them to feel cooler to your eye. Reason for the singles are no preservatives, which the bottles do have. Easy to just take a couple along with you every day depending on usage. I get mine a Kroger’s. Another of those things Cornea doc says you need but is NOT covered by Medicare/Tricare Life. Refresh was the Worst I tried gums the eye lashes together.

I also have a USB Mask I plug into my lap top. IT gets HOT, so protect skin. For sleeping one of the old fashion one’s helps.

Forgot to tell you if you are getting eye infections, use Aveeno baby shampoo put a couple ounces in a small jar add in 4-6 drops of Tea Tree oil stir it up and wash your eye lids with it. Be sure not to open your eye lids until you PAT them dry. J&J baby shampoo drys the skin out to much.

I’ve tried everything on the market. Some of it is just expensive Snake Oil.

Lasix is good for a average of 10 yrs. I’m in Bi-Focal’s now, and am only 2 yrs out of doing Lasix to fix the bad Cataract job. But mine was set to compensate for limited arm mobility due to Arthritis.

Both my Step daughters had it done, the oldest just went into reading glasses, the other is about due.

I use Plastic lenses on the advice of the Optician, He disliked Polycarb ones said they were not as good as just plastic; that are Feather weight. Since he retired I’ve had to rely on the Optometrist. And always watch the weight of the frames. And NO LINES. I wear a small size so they always have to order them anyway. If glass quality is a issue choose Zeiss they made the Hubble Telescope after all.
