This is just a short excerpt from the article. It was originally published 3 weeks ago. Microsoft has started pushing this latest Windows 10 update again, which screwed up my laptop yesterday. Fortunately after several hours I was able to get it back up again.

First the laptop stopped communicating with my network printer and scanner. While I was trying to delete and install new drivers when things went from bad to worse. A system restore to a time before the 3 day old update caused the computer to no longer boot. This isn't one of the issues mentioned in the article. As Microsoft tries to fix issues with this one more problems keep appearing. It is like they are playing a game of Wack-a-mole.

If this update starts causing unusual behavior… before you do a system restore to try and correct problems, make sure you have recovery media with all of your system files backed up on it. Thank you Microsoft for wasting several hours of my time and causing a great deal of anxiety.

The funniest thing that I read while trying to fix the problems caused by the update was an article saying that if you wanted to avoid the problems caused by updates... make sure that you have your computer set up to take them... as if most users still have the option to turn off automatic updates. What a laugh!

Use Linux with a couple of VirtualBox Win10 VMs [reloading is trivial with a spare clone]?

Update:

Don't use any operating system at all. They all have bugs or work erratically. In fact, don't use any kind of technology at all; not until they are all perfected.

They'll only be perfected once they can monitor everyone's activities 365/24/7.

I have several virtual machines installed which is one of the reasons the computer refusing to boot caused my more anxiety than normal. I have a lot of work into this laptop. It went into an auto-recovery loop with a blue screen of death which claimed my processor was incompatible. The log file blamed a startup dll. It all led me on an irritating Microsoft wild goose chase.

When Microsoft made it nearly impossible for most people to disable automatic updates it became fairly obvious that they were less bug fixes and security issues than pushing new ways for them to collect data and target people for ads.

Wouldn't that be nice! But both of our new laptops have 8th generation Intel processors which are basically incompatible with Windows 7 except in virtual machines... which I do have.

This is because of an intentional effort on Microsoft's part to stymie the development of necessary drivers.

The problem is a ,lack of Linux drivers for 8th generation Intel processors not to mention all the other new drivers needed in a new laptop.

Stay with Windows 7 and you won’t have problems.

Up until the point Microsoft stops providing security patches for Windows 7 on 1/14/2020.

Actually, monitoring people would be a much bigger problem than any bugs. So, that would be going backwards.

Since moving from W8 to W10 the only current issues I have on a four-year old 4GB machine is that W10 seems to take up a lot of RAM. Between W10 and McAfee I have less than 30% of RAM available. And, W10 seems to spend too much time conversing with my hard drive. (I just ordered another 16GB RAM.) I am only using 10% of my 1TB drive for storage. But, I get a lot of “program not responding” messages while I wait for something to happen.

My Windows 7 has not been able to complete a monthly roll-up update for almost a year. Other updates work fine.
