freerepublic | DEC. 8, 2018 | greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Greetings from Mo. It was a cold and dreary here today and yesterday. Will be down to 19 degrees tonight BRRR. Yesterday-Pearl Harbor Anniversary was also the Anniversary of my Dad's death 10 years ago.

He was a veteran of WWII, So I just want to acknowledge all veterans in my post today. Thanks to all who served and all who are currently serving in our military. Prayers up for you and yours.

We did have one decent day of sunshine a milder temps this week, and hubby used the snow blower on the leaves and the wood chipper to make some fine mulch which he dumped in the circular compost pens of chicken wire.

Winter crops are doing well still in spite of the temps, we'll see what they withstand tonight. Tuesday is looking a bit warmer and sunny, so that'll be my outdoor day. Due to Hubby's efforts, my patio is looking clean, and I didn't even have to sweep it. LOL

Hope all is well with you and yours. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

Haven’t started anything yet. But I did talk to a guy about setting up some bee hives in spring. And, I’m gearing up to get the worm farm going.

Baker’s Creek Catalog came in, Yipee-I’ll be looking at it tomorrow. Never too early to look at the catalogs.

I ordered sweet paprika seeds and some large jalapeño seeds from Pepper Joe Seed. Will leave the tomato pick to the Mrs.

I got mine this week and am happily contemplating acres and acres of imaginary vegetables. I’ve got the tomato varieties pared down to seven and am going to try the “rose mint” they’re selling. And my kid is enthusiastic enough that I’m going to let her take over the littlest bed and see how she does.

We haven’t even started yet. We like to plant several varieties of tomatoes.

That’s great. I hope she likes it. Kids are so wonderful to get things going with. Mine are all grown, and I miss that.

A beautiful day in Spain, perfect weather to be outside and do some root pruning. For those of you who don’t grow in pots, root pruning is when you take the plant out of its pot, cut away about 75% of the roots and repot it in fresh soil. This lets you keep a plant healthy and growing without having to put it in a bigger pot. If you do put it in a bigger pot it’s a fresh start. I have limited space so I root prune to keep my plants happy.

Thanks for sharing that. I’ve always just repotted stuff in a slightly larger pot, but eventually the pot gets bigger than I want. Just never though about pruning the roots before.

It's finally great to be back, this is the first gardening thread I have had a chance to look at since spring.

I had five bee hives brought to my place this spring, the Methodist preacher down the street moonlights as a bee keeper and had numerous hives split this spring and needed space for them. we were able to get two gallons of honey from one hive and have enjoyed it.

I have finished my fall plantings which included 800 California garlic bulbs, 4000 Albion strawberries and 10,500 onions (six varieties). The weather has been nasty the last couple of days, I promise to have some pics posted soon. I am looking forward to hibernating a few weeks before it's time to start planting tomatoes in the greenhouse the day after Christmas.

I know most pots are round but when root pruning think of a square. Get your plant out of the pot. Cut halfway between the top and bottom then cut off the sides to make a square. Fill your pot with enough fresh soil (my mix is 3 parts soil 1 part manure) so that when you put your plant in it is near the top of the pot, then fill it in with your mix. I have a small saw I use just for pruning.

Cold here in Kansas. I harvested my pineapple today. It is about the size of a grapefruit. Will provide about a bite each for my husband and I. Yum.

I grew pineapples in Florida, along with mangoes and avocados.

Now I grow herbs and cherry tomatoes...that’s about all that will grow! LOL!
