Ken Berry, Star of 'F Troop' and 'Mama's Family,' Dies at 85

Ken Berry, the rubber-legged actor who delighted TV viewers as the blundering Capt. Wilton Parmenter on F Troop and as the accident-prone Vinton Harper on Mama's Family, has died. He was 85.

Berry, an agile song-and-dance man who was encouraged in show business by his U.S. Army sergeant, future Star Trek legend Leonard Nimoy, died Saturday, his ex-wife, Jackie Joseph-Lawrence, reported.

The amiable Berry also was known for starring as town councilor Sam Jones on Mayberry R.F.D., the spinoff of The Andy Griffith Show that was created by CBS after Griffith exited the series — then the No. 1 show in the ratings — after its eighth and final season.

Berry came to fame for portraying the greenhorn Captain Parmenter on ABC's F Troop, which aired for only two seasons (65 episodes from September 1965 through April 1967) but lived on in syndication for decades.

Ken used to tell a story that’s a good lesson in surviving in Hollywood. He had a small house in the valley, and when he got his first big hit role, he wanted to sell it and use the proceeds to buy a place in a swanky neighborhood. His business manager convinced him to hold on to it and find another way to make the move. He did, and at slow times during his career, moved back into it. He could turn down stuff he hated without becoming homeless.

He had his “flavor of the month” periods, but never lived like he thought it would last forever.

A good song and dance man. No opportunities so he went into more acting. Shame.

There were a few articles recently about Tim Conway Jr’s dad’s poor health as well, including I think dementia and bedridden and such. Usually one doesn’t have long at that point. I’m sorry the family is going through this.

Sorry for the loss of this other comedian on the thread as well. You cannot have too many wonderful comedians on the planet and we miss every one when they leave.

I really like Timmy and I am sad for him because this part is worse than after they part from the earth. Wondering if they are in pain and feeling like they might be suffering. Wishing you could help somehow. It’s so hard. Then death is like a blessed relief, only then you feel guilty for not being “sad enough.” Thank Gd eventually (it’s been 2 years since my dad passed) you only remember them as they were when they were at their best, and it’s all good again.

His ex-wife, Jackie Joseph who reported his death, played the part of Ramona in the Andy Griffith show. That’s the one where Andy tries to find a girl for Ernrst T Bass. “How do you do Mrs. Wiiiiley?”

That was a cute ending with the two of them frolicking around the neighborhood like that.
