FULL TITLE: 'This is the THANKS we get!' Trump warns General Motors he'll cut ALL its government subsidies in retaliation for closing U.S. auto plants
President Donald Trump threatened to punish General Motors following the company's decision to shutter Midwest manufacturing plants and lay off thousands of U.S. workers.
A day after the news of the layoffs rattled the industry and raised a potential political problem for the president, the president followed up on an earlier threat that the automaker 'better damn well' open a new plant.
He threatened to yank subsidies for electric cars as GM seeks to reconfigure its supply chain, jettison unpopular models, and refocus on vehicles it thinks will sell in the future.
'Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland. Nothing being closed in Mexico & China,' Trump tweeted Tuesday while a televised White House press briefing was going on.
'The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get! We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including.... for electric cars,' he continued.
Trump's warning comes a day after laid off General Motors workers were seen wiping their tears away after the company axed thousands of people without warning and just before the holidays.

Lesson: Don't "save" a failing company
I just got a new Subaru Legacy. It’s basically their luxury ride.
Mine has all the trim and it’s super fun to drive, especially with the All Wheel Drive. Also, Subaru’s are one of the safest cars on the road. It practically has airbags for it’s airbags. Way better car than the Toyota’s I used to drive.
I sound like a car salesman but it’s true what the company says about their cars. Subaru Love exists.
It's OK. My wife loves hers too. 2018 Outback Touring with all the bells and whistles.
Why am I supporting GM..anyway?
Imagine an end to gov subsidies...energy subsidies, agriculture subsidies, energy subsidies, automotive subsidies, art subsidies, food subsidies, health insurance subsidies (untaxed premiums)...
I got rid of my Subaru.
I liked a lot of things about it, like the fact that with snow tires, that thing could have climbed Mt Everest, but it ATE brakes.
Every year I had to replace the back and front brakes, rotors and all.
I got a Toyota and LOVE it.
My daughter had a Corolla for a long time and it lasted just about forever. we were sold on Toyotas after seeing how well hers held up.
#16 The company I work at hired a new manager 8 years ago who after a year started firing or driving people out. I am the last of the original group. I am lucky (I think) as I am 60 (and good looking) so they may fear age discrimination lawsuit. What is funny now is a new big boss was hired recently that the manager and director report to. That new guy fired 3 high up managers so they may be worried for their jobs.

Once again, our president speaks for US!
GM has the choice of staying the American construction course, or facing American boycotts, btw.
I used to buy GM exclusively. Bought a 2004 Camry and a 2004 Tacoma new. Combined now over 600,000 miles and running like champs. Both of these vehicles were assembled here in the US by non UAW labor. The only problem I have is trying to figure out who Im going to will the damn things to.
AT&T’s contractor used to hire and “train” tech support personnel, taking advantage of government subsidies to cover their wages: 100% for the first month, down to 0% for month seven. They ran batches of employees through, ratcheting up the metrics standards to eliminate workers within six months.
I wonder if they’re still doing it.
We are mixed on Fords. ‘86 Explorer Eddie Bauer was fantastic. Our daughter’s ‘04 Explorer was fantastic. My ‘03 Expedition was fantastic. My ‘14 Expedition (current car Is good except for a $3,000 sun roof track failure. I fought tooth and nail to get the extended warranty to cover that.
Then our daughters bought ‘12 and ‘14 Escapes based on the family experience with Ford products. Both have been rotten — transmissions, ignition modules, spark plugs, cooling fans, throttle bodies, stumbling and hesitation. You name it. Dealers trying to rip the young women off until Dad got on the phone with the service managers. They both HATE them and want to get rid of them. Neither of them will buy a Ford product again.
Our son bought a newer ‘17 Escape and so far, so good.
I have a 05 Escape and just love it the only problem I have had EVER was a broken serpentine belt!!! Best car I have ever had 13 years cant believe how wonderful the car is!!! I am in CA. so cars do seem to hold up longer with no salt on roads from snow ect. !!!!!
This Twitter thread states:
🚨 BREAKING: According to UAW leaders, GM CEO Mary Barra made the final decision to eliminate 14,000 employees after lobbying from former President Obama and other Democrat leaders. Citing the strategic midwest locations of the plants for the 2020 election.....developing
I have a son who is an attorney in pharmaceuticals, trade mark and patents world wide.. He lives in liberal New Jersey. He graduated top of class in law school.. he has a brain that records everything, so he is considered very smart. I say all that ... to say, they hired a woman to head his department... not a man, a woman.. my son could head the department and it would be running smooth... but it had to be a woman... one that does not know much... and my son has to train her. It’s a woman’s world in the east coast area.. and it makes the work environment turn into a “crappy job”.
I look at Sears and know whoever is making decisions on their stores and service... does not know much... must be a young progressive. everything they touch breaks.
Yes, there are jobs out there... but they still are not hiring a 50 yr old... their wisdom and knowledge are not important to the progressive liberal head.
What year, if you remember? Any of them from 2011 onward are real solid performers.
Nobody is surprised. This will not end well for gubmint motors.Tough.
My God
Dont forget about the 3.5 billion dollar haircut the tax payers got on that deal.Obumer just wrote it off.
Can Mr Trump also reimburse the conservative GM dealerships that were torpedoed by Mr Obama?
