Heading into the Auburn game, we talked about Tua Tagovailoas record-breaking season. Against The Citadel, Tagovailoa had set Alabamas single-season passing touchdown record (31). Against Auburn, he set some new records.
Tagovailoa went 25-32 (78.1%) for 324 yards and 5 touchdowns, and he added another 26 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. Those 5 passing touchdowns tied a school record - Gary Hollingsworth threw 5 touchdowns against Ole Miss in 1989. Tagovailoas 6 total touchdowns set a school record for most touchdowns in a single game - Hollingsworth, Shaun Alexander vs. BYU 1998, Santonio Beard vs. Ole Miss in 2002, Blake Sims vs. Auburn in 2014, and Jalen Hurts vs. Mississippi State in 2016.
(Jalen Hurts, One Play, One Touchdown)
Tagovailoa entered the Iron Bowl with 48 career touchdowns, already good enough for #6 in Alabama history. With his 6 touchdowns, he passed Shaun Alexander (50 touchdowns) and Harry Gilmer (52 touchdowns).
He now sits just four shy of John Parker Wilsons 58 touchdowns. Jalen Hurts also added to his total with a touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle, and he now sits at a nice 69 touchdowns. AJ McCarron is #1 in school history with 80 touchdowns.
While, Tagovailoa has the passing touchdown record already in hand; hes still a little short of the passing yardage record. He passed Jake Coker for second place, but he is still 298 yards short of Blake Sims. For now.
Additionally, Tagovailoas 350 total yards gives him 3,400 yards on the season, passing Jake Cokers 3,178 yards in 2015. If the season ended today (SPOILER ALERT: It does not), he would have the third most yards in a single season in Alabama history.
Alabama has, at minimum, two games remaining. Tagovailoa needs 334 yards to pass Jalen Hurts #2 and 437 to pass Blake Sims for #1.
Oh, and were not done yet. Blake Sims has the record for most yards per game in a season with 274.1 (3,837 yards over 14 games). Through 12 games, Tagovailoa is averaging 283.3 yards. Thats with a total of 46 yards in the 4th quarter all season.
Take away those 4th quarter yards, and Tagovailoa has 3,354. Subtracting 4th quarter stats from Hurts in 2016 and Sims in 2014 leaves them with 3,300 yards and 3,259 yards respectively.
Yep, Tagovailoa would be #1.
I had to chuckle yesterday when I heard the commentators of the Auburn/Alabama football gane refer to ‘Air Saban’.
Hey, c’mon, we can’t have this. The guy’s a devout Believer
As good as he is, he’s got nothing over Kyler Murray.
Pingage. But we already know this. :-)
Seems so; not to mention that Murray is a successful two sport star, with a MLB contract signed.
Well, let me see....
Tua won the National College Football Championship before he ever started a college football game.
Considering, OU’s defense is garbage, their RB is their only remaining scholarship back (4th string) due credit needs to go the the magnificent OLine. I was as surprised as anyone Friday.
Tua goes against SEC defenses
Murray? Uhhhhhhh . . .
Like the defenses that have 72 - 74 games?
But I will say, OU is just one injury away from being un ranked. Murray is that good.
I expected that response!
OK . . . never mind twas SEVEN OTs
Say, versus a regulation game of oh . . . 59-56?
But hey, I love offensive CFB . . . just giving you some well deserved ribbing
Granted OU’s defense sucks, but looking at the SEC scores it seems as a conference, their defense looks comparable to the Big 12. The difference being Big 12 may better offense’s.
Maybe you can explain that since I don’t have a clue what you mean. However...
You’re offering an argument where none exists. My point is that it isn’t just a Tua story this year, and that the Heisman isn’t awarded for other-season performances, or non-performances as you cite, but for this year alone. That said, having won whatever you cited doesn’t make Tua a two sport success. But I don’t really need a response, other than to explain as above; I have no dog in this hunt.
