FTR- Mauritania's top speed was actually around 28 knots, with a service speed of 25. Olympic's top speed was 23 knots with a service speed of 21. Mauritania was definitely faster.

During WWII my Father crossed the Atlantic on the Mauritania. It sailed unescorted because of it’s speed.

Olympic Class was built for luxury, not speed.

I am assuming that was the 2nd Mauretania, since the first one was scrapped in 1935.

Their speed would be as fast as today's cruise ships. - Tom

A really irritating presentation. I had to shut it down.

even if she lost, she turned out better than her sister, the titanic. of course, that would be hard to top.

If I remember correctly, the Lusitania was a sister to the Mauritania but was sunk because she didn’t run all of her boilers and therefore was down on speed.

Me too. Just awful, from the opening logo to the wretched music. As soon at the ship profile slowly faded onto the screen to tell me it was 787 feet long, I knew it was a stinker. I can absorb the same amount of information fifty time faster by reading it. Who in the world makes this garbage?

I suppose this is what passes for making education “fun” in elementary school.

You are correct. There was a severe coal shortage and Lusitania was ordered to run well below her top speed in order to conserve fuel.

Wasn’t she zig zagging hoping to avoid German U-boats?

Our family went from England to New York in 1952 on the Mauritania. I don't remember much except heaving my guts out a couple of times.

The only other outstanding thing I recall is the customes official looked in my suitcase, it contained toys, and everyone thought that it was hilarious.
