A broken visionary endures a harsh, nearly penniless life, for a while, while making the world a richer place one unfashionable canvas at a time.
With a story like that, its no wonder any new film about Vincent van Gogh tends to put moviegoers in a defensive crouch. Yet an improbable number of filmmakers of very different temperaments have successfully envisioned the Dutch Post-Impressionists acts of tormented creation on screen.
Julian Schnabel provides the latest and one of the best with At Eternitys Gate, a fierce, immediate and often inspired response to van Goghs life and work.

Or Willem Dafoe fans.
A VERY underrated actor, IMHO.
He also takes on the quirkiest roles out there so that could be why.
I assume he’s hardcore left but I’d rather not know so I can continue to see his movies and enjoy them.
Animal Farm was a great prison movie.
Animal FACTORY!!!
Sorry :)
To Live and Die in LA
And when it came to terrorism in the movie, they got it right.
If it weren’t for Van Gogh’s brother and his brother’s wife, we may not have ever heard of Van Gogh. She heavily promoted his works after his death, possibly out of guilt. IIRC, he only sold one painting in his lifetime, for the equivalent of about $1000 today.
GREAT GREAT GREAT movie!!!!
Very underrated.
William Peterson. Great music.
He was GREAT in it. And crazy :)
“Maybe God made me a great painter for people that aren’t born yet”
Pretty cool line.
I love Willem and will watch it on prime when it arrives.
Looks good!
Also liked Van Gogh in the Dr. Who episode
Loved him in Platoon as Sgt.Elias. Great Actor.
One of Petersen’s best work was Manhunter. Thriller, big time.
Sorry Jodie Foster.
I love the old Calvin and Hobbes cartoon in which dad is explaining to Calvin how everything before the 1930s was all black and white.
ANOTHER great movie!!
You’re bringing back the old times in my head :)
William Friedkin made some great movies. His commentary tracks and interviews about his films are also very interesting and informative, and not the usual “oh, she was the best actress I ever worked with” pablum.
“Boondock Saints”
Not a thread hijack attempt.
5.56mm
One of the best movies of any subject I've seen in a while happens to be about van Gogh. I's called Loving Vincent.
